Education

Ph.D. Geosciences Pennsylvania State University, December 2009 (Nyblade)

Thesis: Using seismic data to interpret the mechanism for Cenozoic volcanism beneath Ross

Island, Antarctica and the Cameroon Volcanic Line, West Africa

M.S. Geosciences Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, July 2004 (Snoke)

Thesis: S-wave velocity structure beneath the Kaapvaal Craton from surface-wave

inversions compared with estimates from mantle xenoliths

B.S. Geology Arizona State University, Dec 2003

Appointments

North Carolina Agricultural and Technological State University, started December 2009

Teaching postdoctoral position involving teaching undergraduate classes in geophysics

and mentoring undergraduate and M.S. students

Seismic database experience

I use Antelope to create and maintain databases of seismic data (2005-present). These include the

AfricaArray (AF) and East Africa (ZP) Experiments as well as a project to monitor a seismic

swarm in Dillsburg, PA. The AF and ZP databases are maintained at IRIS.

Field experience

Seismic deployments in Antarctica (2008),

Tanzania/Uganda (2007), Cameroon (2005, 2006).

Worked with local collaborators and PASSCAL in the deployment, maintenance, and

retrieval of passive seismic equipment and data in remote areas. For the East Africa project,

I was the lead organizer for the logistics and headed the Tanzania eld team.

Skills

Computer platforms: Mac OS, UNIX/LINUX, and PC

Computer languages: Fortran, Tcl, HTML, Python, and shell scripting

Computer software: Antelope, MATLAB, Latex, SAC, Microsoft O ce

Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

Spoken languages: conversational Spanish and Swahili, basic French and Italian

Teaching experience

Teaching assistant at Virginia Tech (2002-2004) and Penn State (2004).

Preparation and delivery of lectures and supervision of lab assignments for undergraduate-

level lab sections. Three semesters as supervisor of other teaching assistants (VT)

Outreach

Undergraduate mentoring at Penn State (2008-2009). In the Fall of 2008, I was involved in

tutoring an undergraduate student in physics. In the Spring of 2009, I mentored two

geoscience majors with projects involving the locating of regional earthquakes in Africa.

Conducted tours of the Virginia Tech Geosciences Museum for K-12 students (2003-2004). This

required understanding a variety of subjects and exhibits and conveying the information in

an interesting and entertaining manner to student groups and their adult chaperones.

Judge for the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences State Meet (2006-2008). The PJAS

solicits university students to judge the presentations of students in grades 7-12. This

involves listening to presentations, rating them according to an established rubric, and

o ering positive feedback.
