NON-PROFIT EXPERIENCE

Three Notched Trail Foundation Charlottesville, VA

Founder 2005-2009

Provided vision and organization to create Three Notched Trail, a cycling/hiking greenway trail from Charlottesville, VA to Afton Mountain, VA for the Charlottesville Chamber of Commerce Leadership School. Continued to seek support for the trail with Albemarle County which resulted in the adoption of the trail concept in the long range planning for Albemarle County. Contacted property owners on the proposed route and have received commitments for easements; began the process of creating a nonprofit foundation to accept grants and donations; provided vision to create an offshoot trail in Charlottesville which was implemented by Chris Gensic, Director of Trails for Charlottesville Parks Department; created logo and proposed flyer for the foundation; obtained web address for the foundation.

Rockfish Valley Community Center (RVCC) Afton, VA

Board Member/President of the Board 2003-2007

Volunteered to help with "work days" at the center and was asked to join the board by the acting president. Served as board member and assigned to the finance committee. Actively managed budget to support operations. Accepted nomination for president and served three terms; recruited new board members, worked with Nelson County (who leased the building to RVCC for $1 a year); lobbied for board approval to support funding request for a "black box theater" and successfully opened the Earl Hamner Theater; provided vision and guidance to lease out available space in the building which generated significant income.

Ribbonwalk Conservancy Charlotte, NC

Board Member/President of the Board 1998-2001

Accepted request from the chairwoman of the board to join the board of directors for the Ribbonwalk Conservancy, a 100 acre plus forest located approximately two miles north of Charlotte. Assigned to the budget committee to prepare budget for upcoming year; prepared contact list and sought donations to the annual fund. Accepted request from the nominating committee to be president of the board and became president in 2000. Provided vision for a new mission statement because original mission statement became obsolete with the opening of the Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont, NC. Successfully passed a new mission statement to manage the property as a "heritage forest" due to the old growth beech tree grove, which we called Ribbonwalk (based on a name of a forest located in England). The change in mission created a budget shortfall as donors for the botanical garden withdrew their support. Led the effort to reduce costs to maintain solvency, eliminating the paid position for executive director and assumed the role of executive director and president of the board. Key accomplishments during my term: maintained the conservancy's relationship with Mecklenburg County Parks Department (who owned the land and leased it to the conservancy for $1 a year); incorporated new mission statement; maintained solvency; organized new annual fund drive; updated contact list; increased membership to provide adequate funding; published quarterly newsletter; increased member programs at the forest; sought and successfully secured major donation of $30,000 to save the last historical log home in Mecklenburg County, moving it to Ribbonwalk, and restoring it to maintain its preservation.
