PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

January 1981 to January 2005, non-equity partner and general partner, .

Reed Smith is an international law firm of over 1,200 lawyers with offices in Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, the District of Columbia, California, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

As an attorney resident in the Pittsburgh office, Mr. Stoner provided counseling and litigation services to private businesses and to a number of colleges and universities.

Mr. Stoner worked closely with all elements of campus communities including Presidents, Vice Presidents, administrative staff, students, faculty members, athletic directors, campus police, media relations offices, trustees and parents.

The institutions he has served include state universities and private colleges and universities with a wide variety of mission commitments, including Catholic, Church of the Brethren, Presbyterian, and Lutheran.

Mr. Stoner provided legal opinions on legal issues, working closely with in-house counsel, where present, and provides as well traditional legal services of reviewing contracts, drafting policies and counseling on legal impacts of proposed courses of action.

Mr. Stoner has conducted and managed litigation, including coordinating coverage and cost issues with insurance carriers and providing cost-effective legal services with minimal staffing.

Ed is an experienced litigator in both federal and state court, as well as before administrative and quasi-judicial forums such as the NCAA Infractions Committee as well as local, state and federal agencies. He has supervised associate and assistant attorneys and hired and supervised paralegals and staff.

As a Reed Smith attorney, Mr. Stoner conducted many confidential investigations on a wide range of issues.

Mr. Stoner has many years of trial practice, principally in federal court, at both the trial level and as an appellate advocate, including the full range of pre-trial motions and discovery, principally in the private sector. He has represented management in negotiating collective bargaining agreements with steelworkers, operating engineers, clerks, maintenance workers, teamsters, and K-12 teachers, as well as with maintenance, ground crew and staff employees at private and state-related universities.

He has represented management in numerous labor contract arbitrations in the United States and in Canada on issues ranging from bidding, bumping and discipline to multi-million dollar pension claims.

Responsible for a wide variety of legal matters as assigned by partners, covering entire gamut of services provided by a full-service law firm: tax, pension, corporate, employment and litigation. Conducted collective bargaining in many contexts reflective of the steel industry. Participated in class action litigation, appellate litigation and jury and non-jury trials; exposure to advising executives of a wide variety of businesses, including higher education.

National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA)

President and Chair of the Board of Directors, June 2001- June 2002.

Was responsible for management of 22-person national board of directors for a membership Association consisting of more than 1,400 campuses and 3,100 attorneys in the United States and Canada. Developed annual work plan to implement strategic goals, appointed and charged all committees and task forces, and developed board meeting agendas. Had general oversight of the Association s various activities through the administration of a $2 million-plus annual operating budget. Achievements included adoption of Association s first comprehensive strategic plan, mission statement and strategic priorities integrated with financial planning, leadership development for Board of Directors to focus their creativity on matters of consequence, and implementation of technology-based Association services such as virtual seminars.
