Professional Experience
Reed was born in Denver, Colorado and grew up on a cattle ranch near Missoula, Montana. He returned to Colorado to attend Colorado State University, receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1960. Reed engaged in active veterinary practice from the early 1960s until he returned to the family ranch in Missoula, where he was the managing general partner of the ranch from 1964 to 1983. During these years, Reed also served as a faculty affiliate for the Department of Range Management at the University of Montana, School of Forestry and on the Montana Land Management Committee of the National Wildlife Federation.
From 1983 to 1984, Reed served in the Montana State Senate. During his Senate tenure, he was Chairman of the Committee on Indian Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Public Health Committee.
After law school, he practiced in Spokane, Washington, moving back to Oregon in 1991 to take an administrative position at the Oregon Water Resources Department. Reed is an Adjunct Professor of Water Law at the Willamette University College of Law.
On July 1, 2005, Reed retired from the Water Resources Department and became of counsel to Karnopp Petersen. Reed’s service to the firm’s clients focuses on water right and water law issues.
