Conduct in-depth research, analysis and strategic planning for a variety of nonprofits and foundations. Use research findings
to inform messaging and communications strategy on issues ranging from environmental sustainability to health policy.
Wrote twenty-page report on the impact of the Surdna Foundation s ocean grantmaking. Conducted 30 stakeholder interviews,
evaluated four years of media coverage and grantee reports, made recommendations on strategic close-out grants, wrote the
report and oversaw its design and promotion.
Conducted qualitative and quantitative analysis of media coverage of foundations responses to the 2008 economic downturn
for the Philanthropy Awareness Initiative. Results featured in High Expectations, High Opportunity.
Conducted opportunity analysis of credit card legislation and regulations utilized by Pew Credit Card Reform campaign.
Researched media coverage around child care employment issues for a coalition of early care and education advocates, and
wrote a 20-page analysis to inform a messaging platform focused on jobs and the economy.
Serve as web 2.0 expert on Spitfire staff. Advising colleagues on best practices, introduce web-based tools to improve internal
communication and productivity, guide clients through and manage web design projects and make strategy recommenda-
tions for the nonprofit and philanthropic communities.
Maintain Spitfire s website. Created and continue to maintain internal wiki to improve inter-office information sharing. Devel-
oped internal rubric for website analysis. Regularly train staff of 30 on social media, website analysis, and web 2.0 communica-
tions strategies. Write pieces on onine communications for Spitfire s bi-monthly newsletter, distributed to a list of approximately
2,000 nonprofit professionals, foundation staff, and communications consultants.
Made recommendations on information architecture and wireframing for the redesign of the Surdna Foundation website, in-
cluding restructuring navigational pathways around each audience and reflecting their rebranding and new philanthropic focus
areas in overall design.
Manage nonprofit coalitions by crafting shared communications, consensus-building and facilitating meetings, planning
large-scale events and providing ongoing communications support.
Coordinated the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions first trade show appearance as a coalition at the 2010 Boston
Seafood Show. Coached Alliance members on messaging. Wrote copy for and oversaw design of collateral materials for an ex-
hibit which provided exposure to thousands of major seafood buyers. Secured a panel in the convention program on sustainable
seafood sourcing, wrote talking points and coached panelists on effective public speaking skills. Planned a cocktail reception
and advised member NGOs on promotion, resulting in a 100% increase over the expected number of business attendees.
Made project management and online collaboration software recommendations to coalitions such as the Conservation Alli-
ance for Seafood Solutions, Children s Leadership Council, and the Pew Partnership Project/C Campaign.
Provide hands-on and web-based coaching and training to nonprofits on communications planning, media outreach and
messaging.
Held interactive webinars and provided one-on-one coaching for over 50 public health administrators and professionals. Train-
ings focused on how to effectively communicate about pressing public health issues, such as H1N1 and teenage pregnancy.
Created comprehensive media lists, pitched reporters, and wrote opinion pieces.
Secured mentions for the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Seattle Post-Intel-
ligencer. Drafted and placed op-eds and letters to the editor on ocean policy and climate change in the San Francisco Chronicle,
Washington Times, Oregonian, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and Huffington Post.
