Department of Defense, 97 AMW/MX Directorate Altus, Oklahoma
Executive Officer
As Executive Officer, I am the Maintenance Operations Support Manger to the Director and Deputy Director of Aircraft Maintenance. Some of my daily duties include: maintaining and prioritizing agendas, tasks and projects; fielding incoming calls, making appointments, completing Wing and Higher Headquarters taskings, maintaining electronic records keeping, and performing general errands. Oversee the organization's workflow; as account holder for the Maintenance Directorate's Task Management Tool, a SharePoint program, it is my responsibility is to receive taskings, delegate them to the appropriate office of primary responsibility, and ensure the tasks are tracked and completed by their suspense dates. Prepare and draft all outgoing correspondence, in a timely manner, as well as review incoming correspondence for accuracy. Advise leadership on the unit awards program criteria, deliverables, and deadlines. Improved communication efficiency as primary liaison between internal and external departments. Implemented staff summary coordination process which increased efficiency and productivity in the Directorate. Before being assigned to the Executive Officer position, any correspondence requiring coordination, review, and/or approval was sent through lengthy, inefficient, and highly inaccurate email chains. Upon reviewing the process, I implemented a new process that uses SharePoint to upload documents so all involved parties can review correspondence in one place, open it from the assigned link, make and save changes. This allows for tracked changes, assures information accuracy, and provides real time knowledge of where the coordination process is while ensuring its timely completion. As a result, the coordination process has shortened, in some cases, from 3 or 4 months to as little as 2 weeks. As a result, I reviewed and processed more than 200 plans, staff summary sheets, and awards with zero push-back since taking this position in April 2011.
Act as the Directorate's focal point and protocol officer for reports, staff assistance visits and inspections from Air Force, Major Commands, and Wing level staff agencies. Responsible for the successful immersions of incoming Wing Commanders, Vice Commanders, and Command Master Sergeants providing overviews of the Maintenance Directorate's mission, vision, goals and accomplishments. Assist in briefing visiting dignitaries from other organizations regarding manpower, efficiencies, organizational structure, issues, ways-forward, and innovations. I volunteer to give visiting dignitaries the Wing mission brief, which is a team effort outside of my primary organization. Develop and present quarterly Director of Maintenance (DOM) Call briefings to over 600 employees on 3 different shifts. Primarily DOM Calls are used to present awards, brief force structure, provide future outlooks, ensure appropriate holiday and worker safety items are briefed, and answer employee questions.
Streamlined and monitor electronic bulletin board ensuring 645 employees are briefed over latest safety and morale information. A once overlooked avenue is now a sought after asset for briefing important events, safety flashes, and personnel morale boosters. Upon taking over the electronic bulletin board system, I evaluated the system's inefficiency because of a lack of information and minimal visual appeal. Using PowerPoint, I redesigned the format and ensured that all data relative to the workforce was added. Additionally, I created a way to track safety bulletins for the Maintenance Directorate Safety office where I file all briefed safety issues for future inspector access. This tracking system ensures the organization's compliance with OSHA and Air Force regulations.
Successfully led key events which resulted in positive community, base, and Air Force outcomes. Volunteered as main point of contact for the Maintenance Directorate in support of the Feds Feed Families Food Drive, Combined Federal Campaign, Air Force Assistance Fund, Operations Air Force Cadets, Maintenance Effectiveness Award and Commander in Chief's Installation Excellence Award. Through these initiatives, I helped bring in over 1500 lbs. of food to restock the community cupboard, raise over $28K for local and national charities, ensured the immersion of over 30 AF Cadets, helped identify maintenance efficiencies and effective and efficient utilization of installation facilities and programs. As a graduate of the Leadership Altus Air Force Base program, I am a volunteer mentor for Leadership Altus Air Force Base classes.
March 2001 to April 2011
Department of Defense, 97 AMW Maintenance Directorate Altus AFB, Oklahoma
Aerospace Maintenance Technician
After graduating from the Southwest Technology Center and fulfilling a time requirement through the "Grow Your Own Mechanic Program" with Altus Air Force Base civilian maintenance, I was hired as an apprentice civilian technician for the KC-135(R) model airframe in 2001 and positioned in the Isochronal Inspection (ISO) Dock. In the ISO Dock I was trained to perform extensive inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance. After showing great initiative and ability, I was quickly promoted to a fully qualified technician in 2004. Specialized in Aero Repair (A/R), my duties consisted of flight control component and cable inspection, repair and replacement of flight control components and flight control cables, as well as rigging checks on flight control systems and initial rigging upon component or cable replacement. I find it notable that I am the only female technician at Altus AFB with these qualifications. Additionally, I served on the Hourly Post Flight (HPO) Inspection Team. The HPO Team performs abbreviated inspections on our flight line assigned aircraft. Routinely volunteered to perform duties in addition to my basic job requirements; qualified as an aircraft Tow Supervisor, Jack Supervisor, and Refuel/Defuel Supervisor as well as cross trained to a dissimilar airframe, the C-17 Globe Master, and performed Transient Alert duties; recovery, thru-flight, refuel, and launch of transient aircraft. As a fully qualified Red X certified maintainer, tasked to performed inspections of other technician's work to verify the maintenance was completed and quality assured. While performing task-oriented supervisory duties (jacking, towing, refuel/defuel), led teams of up to 10 workers in the safe accomplishment of high risk tasks with zero defects or safety violations. Developed the work force by training incoming apprentices and verified their development with supervision to ensure their records were properly documented to show their progress or need for improvement. On both the C-17 and KC-135 airframes, ensured proper aircraft forms documentation to track all required maintenance. Using the computer based program, G081 Maintenance Data Collection system, managed aircraft data that included the input of maintenance jobs, taking of maintenance time performed, ordering and tracking of parts, and ensuring the parts were returned to supply or turned in to back shops for repair. Improved communication efficiency as the liaison between the ISO Dock and back shops as well as scheduled those shops to perform specific repairs and special inspections during the aircraft phase time. Development and implemented aircraft inspection G081 phase packages that direct specific inspections to be performed at intervals in the aircraft's flying schedule.
During the below dates, performed duties as Production Controller and Safety and Environmental Assistant in areas where assistance was needed. The details served were to accommodate for pregnancies. Per the Fetal Protection Program, pregnant females are not allowed to work in industrial areas which may pose a health risk to the mother and unborn fetus.
April 2010-Jan 2011 Safety and Environmental Assistant
While detailed to the Safety office, participated with The Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and assisted with environmental and safety correspondence and research. Some of my duties include researching, formatting, writing, and editing the local monthly VPP/Safety/Environmental Newsletter using Microsoft Publisher; managing electronic records (ERM) and training guides (HAZCOMM Slides); updating job safety analysis (JSA) logs and safety correspondence such as the building emergency evacuation map, emergency management plan, work site visitor informational, as well as attend scheduled safety and environmental meetings to record minutes for mass briefing. Such meetings involved monthly Director of Maintenance/Employee Hazard Report meetings, Union/Labor/Management meetings, and Wing level environmental meetings. After reviewing the building emergency evacuation plan, noticed that the Shelter-In-Place signage was not visible to employees, the exit maps were outdated, and there was no visitor informational. In the event of a power loss, there would be no way for employees/visitors to find the shelter. Seeing a need for better signage, I researched and procured high visibility Shelter-In-Place signs that extend from the wall and glow in the dark. Developed and proposed a new building emergency evacuation map which was approved by the Director of Maintenance and is now the standard map for the Directorate. Designed and created VPP posters for placement in work areas and made weekly visits to work sites collecting Employee Hazard Reports while promoting VPP. Received initial training in Hazmat inspection criteria and performed work site inspections of Flammable and Hazmat lockers utilizing Air Force Instruction Guidance. Attended the OSHA 10 and 30 hour Supervisor Safety courses and became certified to perform work site evaluations. I quickly adapted to an unfamiliar work environment and was requested by the Safety Office to stay on as a Safety/Environmental assistant.
Dec. 2009-April 2010 Production Controller
July 2007-Oct 2008 Production Controller
During these details, I coordinated ISO/HSC maintenance for the C-17 and the KC-135 Tanker aircraft. In addition to managing KC-135 production, I extended my experience to the C-17 HSC Flight which had lost a controller. Ordered parts, coordinated parts for repair, turn in/tracking of due in for maintenance (DIFM) items, utilizing G081 for Maintenance Data Collection, and ensuring proper aerospace equipment forms documentation and transcription. Tracked DIFM items and ensured their turn in was on time or ahead of time. Fervently, alerted all personnel of aircraft component operation using the hangar intercom system; ensured worker safety. Identified the technician's need for assistance in completing forms documentation and took the opportunity to ensure the timely completion of all forms requirements before the end of each duty day. This allowed the technicians to spend more time with hands on the aircraft, ensured that parts were ordered more expeditiously, and enabled faster repair times. Furthermore, researched technical data for technicians on the flight line which also enabled the technician to stay on the aircraft and not make time consuming trips back to the tech order library. Providing these additional duties for the technicians allowed them to focus on the primary mission. Before returning to aircraft maintenance duties, I effectively trained a replacement controller for KC-135 and C-17 duties in minimal time without any disruption to production.

2012 Leadership Altus Air Force Base Altus AFB, Oklahoma
Leadership Development Leadership
Participation in the Leadership Altus Air Force Base (LAAFB) Program comes from supervisor nomination. Each year, a selected group of civilians in leadership roles go through a yearlong program that fosters networking, problem solving, organizational skills, time management, and leadership ideas and principles. With my supervisor's nomination, I was selected to participate in the LAAFB program. The program offered several civilian development classes/trainings which the class participated in as a group, they are as follows:
7 Habits of Highly Effective People - A Steven Covey Seminar
DiSC Assessment: Transitional Assessment/Communication Transitioning from Technical to Supervising
Situational Leadership and Conflict Management
4 Lenses
5 Choices - a Steven Covey Seminar
The required curriculum for the class was to read and discuss the following leadership materials as well as write two reports:
The Servant: A Simple Story about the True Essence of Leadership by James C. Hunter
Building Character: Strengthening the Heart of Good Leadership by Gene Klann
The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You by John C. Maxwell
First Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently by Marcus Buckingham
Flight of the Buffalo: Soaring to Excellence, Learning to let Employees Lead by James A. Belasco
Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Others Don't by Jim Collins
Lincoln on Leadership: Executive Strategies for Tough Times by Donald T. Philips
At the conclusion of the program, the class was required to put together a class project which was to be a service recognition event. Throughout the program there was a common theme for many of the class members; much of the class had been working with the same organization for as many as 30 years and had never had an immersion tour of the base and did not know how their jobs fit into the mission at Altus AFB. Many of the class members were experiencing Altus AFB for the first time in their careers. Noticing this commonality, I suggested that we develop a junior level civilian immersion tour for incoming and junior level employees. Without hesitation, the class agreed that this should be our project. Taking this project head-on, I assigned responsibilities to class members that would help develop an itinerary for a one day immersion and developed criteria for selecting the junior level participants; constructed the itinerary, scheduled a luncheon for the junior level participants to meet the Wing Commander, and coordinated transportation for the day's events. During the Luncheon, the participants all had the opportunity to talk to the man who runs the base and ask questions regarding the future of their employers. The tour was a huge success that garnered 100 percentage positive feedback. The Wing Commander lauded the idea as "a wise investment in human capital" and loved our decision to invest our knowledge back in to the workforce. He liked the idea so much that he has implemented it as part of his Leadership University curriculum and it is now a mainstay at Altus AFB.
Because I suggested the idea and took charge of its development, my peers recognized me with a "Tip of the Spear" plaque at the graduation luncheon. The opportunity was priceless and I felt honored.
