EMPLOYMENT

SEAWATER RESEARCH LABORATORY DIRECTOR YEARS EMPLOYED (JUNE 2007 - PRESENT)

Virginia Institute of Marine Science Gloucester Point, Virginia

Duties include the overseeing the initial start-up and daily operations of a new multi-user seawater research laboratory.

Troubleshooting life support equipment and the monitoring and control systems of the facility. Establishment of operational

protocols for all laboratory areas including: large general purpose aquaculture lab, BSL-2 and BSL-3 aquatic pathogen labs,

toxicology lab, carcinogen exposure lab, necropsy laboratory, and a radioisotope lab. Staff development, training, and

supervision of lab support personnel. Consultation with VIMS/SMS faculty and visiting scientist regarding operational

requirements of specific experimental systems. Coordination of public educational activities concerning the laboratory

facilities and ongoing research.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT MANAGER YEARS EMPLOYED (SEPT 2003 - MAY 2007)

Belize Aquaculture Limited Blair Atholl, Belize

Duties included the evaluation and implementation new technologies to increase yields, enhance stock health, improve the

predictability of harvests, and increase the profitability of a vertically integrated near-zero discharge shrimp farm rearing

Penaeus vannamei. Screening stocks for potential pathogens utilizing PCR and routine microscopic techniques.

Identification of optimal water quality parameters with respect to hyperintensive stocking strategies. Coordinating with the

Farm Manager and Hatchery Manager the implementation of the new methodologies as they are developed.

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT YEARS EMPLOYED (JUL 2002 - AUG 2003)

Texas A & M University Shrimp Mariculture Project Port Aransas, Texas

Duties included developing a standardized methodology for evaluating the efficacy of feed attractants and feeding stimulants

in prepared diets for penaeid shrimp. Maintenance of recirculating seawater systems in order to maintain optimal water

quality parameters.

ASSISTANT RESEARCH SCIENTIST YEARS EMPLOYED (JAN 2002 -MAY 2002)

University of Texas Marine Science Institute Port Aransas, Texas

Duties included the overseeing the propagation of live food organisms and maintenance of water quality parameters for the

culture of larval Atlantic Croaker Micropogonias undulatus and Red Drum Sciaenops ocellatus to be used in larval fish

ecology and larval behavior studies.

ASSISTANT HATCHERY MANAGER YEARS EMPLOYED (APR 1999 - JUL 2001)

Belize Aquaculture Limited Blair Atholl, Belize

Duties included the overseeing the larval production schedule of a 36 tank commercial shrimp hatchery capable of rearing

50 million post-larval Penaeus vannamei and Penaeus stylirostris per month. Supervision of a crew of fifteen full-time

hatchery personnel. Propagation of larval food organisms and maintenance and control of water quality parameters.

Identification and control of parasites and diseases. Assisting the Hatchery Manager with stocking strategies and

scheduling.

LABORATORY MANAGER YEARS EMPLOYED (MAY 1993 - FEB 1999)

Flax Pond Marine Laboratory Stony Brook, New York

Duties included the design, maintenance, and repair of flow through and recirculating seawater culture systems in support

of marine research at the laboratory. Consultation with faculty researchers from SUNY Stony Brook s Marine Science

Research Center on experimental design and supervision of graduate students. Propagation of larval food organisms and

maintenance of water quality parameters. Coordination and supervision of public educational activities concerning coastal

and marsh ecology and conducting public tours of the laboratory facilities and adjacent tidal wetlands.

HATCHERY MANAGER / AQUACULTURE BIOLOGIST YEARS EMPLOYED (SEPT 1990 - NOV 1991)

Duties included the design and maintenance of culture systems for penaeid shrimp and several species of marine and estuarine

fishes. Other responsibilities included culture of larval food organisms, calculation of feeding rates and food conversion

efficiencies, identification and control of parasites and diseases, and the testing and maintenance of water quality parameters.

AQUACULTURE RESEARCH ASSISTANT YEARS EMPLOYED (JAN 1990 - SEPT 1990)

Duties included the design and maintenance of culture systems for red drum, hybrid striped bass, oysters, and penaeid shrimp.

Other responsibilities included culture of larval food organisms, calculation of feeding rates and food conversion efficiencies,

FOREIGN FISHERIES OBSERVER YEARS EMPLOYED (APR 1985 - AUG 1987)

Duties included the monitoring of the catch of prohibited species, determination of the species composition of the catches,

and collection of other biological data aboard several large foreign trawlers off the coast of Alaska.
