To whom it may concern:
I am writing in regard to possible elementary school teaching opportunities in the Albuquerque Public School system on a full-time basis. My husband and I have just moved to Albuquerque from Australia. I have a Bacheloraaas degree in Special Education from Bloomsburg University (USA) and a Masteraaas Degree from George Washington University (USA) which focused on transitions for individuals with learning disabilities.
I have a variety of different work experiences within educational settings. I was a resource room teacher at a Middle School (Grades 7-9) in Pennsylvania, working with students with learning disabilities for the first six years of my career. I provided instruction for these individuals within my classroom as well as providing support for them in other regular education classrooms. In addition to teaching, I was also responsible for the development of individualized educational plans for each of my students and for tracking progress against those goals.
I then moved to Hawaii where I had two teaching positions. In both cases, I provided instruction and support for students across multiple settings.
In Hawaii I met my husband and we then moved to North Carolina where he had accepted a faculty position with East Carolina University. I taught for three years there in two different elementary schools. My first year I taught students with learning and emotional difficulties in a self contained classroom. The last two years I taught students with mild/moderate intellectual disabilities in a self-contained classroom.
We then moved back to Hawaii as my husband and I were both offered positions with the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii. I was responsible for the development and implementation of an Adult Literacy program at the Hawaii State Hospital. The Hospital was a 180 bed facility providing treatment for individuals diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness. At any given time our program served about 35 students with a wide range of skills and cultural backgrounds. I typically provided over twenty hours of direct instruction within the classroom each week using small group and individual formats. My other responsibilities included curriculum development, individualized assessment, scheduling, staff supervision, and practicum student supervision.
In summary, I have had a wide range of experiences with students of all ages in a number of different settings. My strengths include assessment, individualized curriculum development, and facilitating learning with students who have had prior difficulties. In addition, I have developed excellent working relationships with peers and parents. I am confident that I could make a strong contribution to your school. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact me at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
Roshani Samarasinghe
