RESEARCH PROJECTS

Shape optimization for structural fracture using XFEM (Ph.D. Research) May 2005 Present

Optimized shape of structural components under fatigue fracture for maximum service life.

The process is very efficient as XFEM facilitates crack growth simulation without re meshing.

Increased service life by 85% and reduced weight by 24% using proposed design process.

Knowledge based design (Funded by AF SBIR Phase I & II) Jan 2007 Aug 2008

episTree DesignTM embeds knowledge (documents, emails, contacts, etc.) directly into the solid model.

Developed a library of geometric primitives to enable knowledge driven, parametric solid modeling.

3 D micro robotic arm with a thermal actuator muscle (Funded by SANDIA Labs) Dec 2007 May 2008

Conducted motion and multi physics simulation for a 1.2 mm long 3 D MEMS micro robotic arm.

The bio inspired design employs a novel transmission activated by a thermal actuator muscle.

The arm, fabricated using SUMMiT VTM, has applications in nanotech and biomedical industries.

Concurrent shape optimization of structural components (M.S. Thesis) Aug 2003 Apr 2005

The process designs parts with required structural performance and minimum manufacturing cost.

Integrated CAD, CAM, and FEA tools with optimization algorithm to facilitate seamless data transfer.

The system is automated, handles complex 3 D parts, and facilitates concurrent product optimization.
