Research about the philosophical foundations of the social theory of L on Walras in the
utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham. Supervisor: Dr. Jimena Hurtado Pe a.
Publication:
Rivera-Sotelo, A da-Sof a (2011) El Utilitarismo de Jeremy Bentham: Fundamento de la Teor a
de Leon Walras? En Cuadernos de Econom a, Vol. XXX, No. 55, ISNN versi n f sica 0121-4772,
ISNN versi n electr nica 2248-4337
This text challenges assumptions about foundations of the L on Walras marginalist theory on the
utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham. The problematic is approached through a comparative study of
Bentham s and Walras ideas on three focus areas: 1. their understandings of society and social
objective; 2. their theoretical and methodological approaches in direct relation to their particular
social theory; 3. their location of a principle of utility within their general theory of society. This
study contributes to an ongoing debate about the philosophical foundations of rational choice
theory and is an attempt to complicate presumptions of homogeneity in the work of the founders of
marginalism.
