Assist grocers, and manufactures develop strategic competitive advantages, in Marketing, Advertising, Merchandising, and Operations that will give them a clear edge, and make them the brand/store of choice for the Hispanic/Ethnic shopper. Have created Ole Foods from scratch for the Brookshires Grocery Company, and have assisted other fine Grocers such as Balls Foods, Alberstons Inc., Horner Foods, Martins Foods, Super S Foods, SW Supermarkets, Harps, Strack and Van Till, and even helped Gigante de Mexico come to the USA. I also give seminars on the Hispanic Consumer detailing wants, needs, motivations, asperations, Level of acculturation, region and country of origin.

APRIL 1979 TO NOV 1996 DIRECTOR OF MERCHANDISING FOR FIESTA MART INC.

Acted as the key merchandising resource for the company. All Merchandisers, Department Supervisors, Advertising, and Marketing personnel reported to me. Responsible for purchasing, sales, gross margin, establishing operating procedures, pricing, shrink, inventory control, and Category Management, for this $650,000,000.00 a year company.

Achievements

When starting as Director of Merchandising at Fiesta, the company had just suffered its first unprofitable year of operation ever, with 6% declining same store sales. By the end of the 1st quarter as Director of Merchandising the same store sales were showing a 6% increase and the company made a profit.

Created a Salchichoneria (Mexican Deli) and a Carniceria (Mexican over the counter meat department). Both departments exceeded sales and gross margin budgets their very first quarter and continued excellent growth thereafter.

Only store director to operate a store with over a 9% bottom line (EBIDA was11% twice)

Only store director to have a bottom line profit in excess of $700,000.00 in a quarter. This was accomplished at two different stores.

Managed with increasing levels of responsibility 5 supermarkets for Fiesta ranging from 56,000 sq. ft to 236,000 sq. ft.

As a store director, evaluated and selected software for labor scheduling and implemented the same across the chain.

As a store director, brought vitamins and mineral supplements, health foods, gourmet foods, Indian, and Pakistani foods to the international mix at Fiesta.

Developed Central and South American offering while store director.

Coordinated the activities of more than 20 highly diversified leased departments.

Managed the first Hydroponic Garden in a Retail environment anywhere in the world.

Consulted with NASA on Zeoponics (Hydroponics for the Space Station).

Featured in the first edition of Progressive Grocers Outstanding Store Managers.

1975 TO 1979 - DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS OBRIENS FOOD MARKETS

Responsible for Merchandising, Advertising, and Operations of this seven store supermarket chain in Baytown and surrounding Houston area.

Achievements

Promoted to Buyer after 3 months as a store director.

Ran Operations, Advertising, and Merchandising after 6 months.

OBriens had lost money for the previous 2 and half years. In six month after starting, the company made a turn around with a nice profit.

Sales growth of 20% per year

Improved profitability each year

Margins in Grocery increased 2.5%

Margins in Produce increased 4%

Company profit, EBITDA went to 2.8%

1974 STORE DIRECTOR FOR HANDY ANDY INC.

Started part-time after school. Worked as a sacker, janitor, checker, stocker, Booth clerk, booth manager, receiver, 3rd man, asst. manager and store manager. I was the youngest Store Director in the History of the chain. I opened three supermarkets for Handy Andy and was in the top three for salary cost, as well as gross profit consistently.
