Consultant and Head of Department
December 2003 March 2005
Middle East College of Information Technology (MECIT)
Knowledge Oasis, Muscat, Oman in collaboration with Center for British
Teachers
Analyzed education standards at MECIT; developed and implemented a skills-based English
Foundation and Semester program for Arab-speaking Muslim students preparing for an
internationally acceptable College / University education. The program, officially accepted by
Oman Ministry of Higher Education, re-organized the English curriculum into six-week units:
students progress faster and more meaningfully through foundation school. Many students
moved from 0.2 to 3.2 on TWE holistic grading scale within one Semester. Trained teachers in
twice-weekly workshops: emphasized a skills-based, collaborative approach to education and
understanding the needs of Second Language Speakers. Developed and implemented
Advanced English program for first Semester students; created and coordinated Writing
across the Curriculum syllabus. Responsible for training and providing leadership and
direction: a faculty of 24 teachers and 800 Foundation students; approximately 200 Advanced
English Semester full- and part-time students. The team I put together took the challenge of
putting in place a system foreign to them conceptually and practically; and learned to develop
their own culturally appropriate materials. I was able to motivate them successfully to
implement the program with discipline and consistency. In order to achieve these goals, I
researched and presented several all-faculty workshops:
