PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
August 2004 to Present, Teachers-Teachers.com, Colorado/Maryland
Information Technologies Architect
Teachers-Teacher s is the largest internet based education recruitment service company in the
nation. With around a half million teachers, and over two thousand school districts, it maintains
high profile and high usage websites that require an emphasis on dependability, availability and
reliability. Initially, was contracted to maintain and extend the web technologies.
Company growth coupled with inadequate server architecture and maintenance caused a rapid
shift in responsibilities to primary network and system administration. Worked with the CEO and
other stakeholders to achieve consensus and buy-in for a project to move to a more robust
architecture. Worked with stakeholders to vision, design, implement, and support the new server
farm build-out.
The new architecture consists of domain integrated Windows 2003 servers, a holistic approach to
security - firewall (stateful and proxied), network, server, operating system, application, data,
Storage Area Network devices, Linux firewalls and Linux mail servers. Customer-facing product
uptime has improved by a factor of ten, and critical server, device, service, security, and network
failures has been reduced to nearly zero.

Designed and implemented a comprehensive monitoring solution for the server farm at several
tiers (external interfaces, network, power, server/devices physical and logical states, services, and
internal interfaces). Monitoring probes include network health, VLAN segment health, network
segment health, power, temperature, network controller, raid controller health, physical disk
health, disk pool health, logical drive space, memory utilization, CPU utilization, services, internal
and external interfaces. Also implemented a tracking system with escalation functionality to allow
administrators to easily identify and troubleshoot the nature and priority of a probe failure.
Designed and implemented a secure access plan to allow managers, developers, system
administrators, and end users access to network and server resources via VPN, with firewall
policies active directory group policies, and IPSEC control points.
Improved and re-launched a disaster recovery system that spanned facilities, network, servers,
applications, and data (backup, retention, and recovery). The recovery system included both
intraday, high-availability backups (SAN snapshots) and restore/forks (clones) as well as off-site
media (tape), and testing procedures to ensure viable, verified restore/recovery points.
Technologies included Microsoft Windows, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Sharepoint Services
(2.0 and 3.0), IPSwitch iMail, Active Directory, EMC SAN, Watchguard Firewalls, Dell Switches,
Symantec Backup Exec (v10), Microsoft Windows Update Services, IIS, Cold Fusion, DotNet
(v1.0, 2.0, 3.0), Active Directory, Microsoft DNS, Linux Bind, SNMP, LDAP, IIS, Whats-up Gold
monitoring, Wildfire Jabber IM, RhinoSoft FTP, and Sawmill Web Tracking.
October 2000 to Present, Contract, Colorado
Independent Systems & Network Administrator Consultant
Multiple engagements working with Corporate Internets, Intranets, and Web Hosting solutions in
mixed environments. Technologies included Unix (Solaris, BSD, Linux) as well as Windows (NT
2000, and 2003). Solutions include complete server farm build-out, server consolidation through
virtualization tools, maintenance, and expansion using Sun, Dell, and HP servers, Cisco routers,
switches, and firewalls, as well as other third party Linux and Unix hardware.
Responsible for design and deployment of Anti-Virus software throughout corporate environments
(servers, workstations, laptops). Designed and deployed maintenance methodology for system
patches and virus updates.
Established and maintained standards & practices for initial server farm deployment, day to day
operations, database replication, standby servers, Active Directory Maintenance, virus monitoring,
and deployment of hardware and software clustering technologies.

Marquee projects to date:
Compass Marketing (Intranet/internet Server Farm)
Contracted to assess the continued use of their current network and server solution. Worked
with client to identify and pinpoint security, availability and reliability issues. Based on
recommendations, client built out a new server farm solution. Was involved in the visioning,
design, and implementation of their new solution. A key component of the solution was
combining several older physical servers running disparate software (in this case, Exchange
Servers and Blackberry Servers) into one new physical server using VMware. Technologies
included Windows Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server,
Microsoft Update Services, VMware (v1.0), Symantec Backup Exec (v9) and Clarion SAN.
X2Delta Networks (Web Hosting Server Farm)
Visioned, designed, and built (hands-on) a high-reliability/availability server farm and
administered that farm for more than three years. Environment is a mixed Windows and Linux
environment, with Windows running ads, web, ftp, mail, and database services; and Linux
running firewall and domain name services. Designed and implemented security and
maintena nce protocols, including software upgrades, virus protection, and backup.
Technologies included Windows Server, Windows SQL Server, Windows Exchange Server,
mySQL, Bind, ipchains, iptables, VPN, Cold Fusion, and Perl.
Sprint Mobile (Internal Development Server Farm)
Contracted to manage the build out and deployment of Sprint s mobile (4GL) development
center in Denver. Duties included coordination with multiple vendors and corporate
departments throughout the country to arrange for network connectivity and hardening
(security and virus protection).
Newmont Mining Corporation (Intranet/internet Server Farm)
Initially contracted as a developer. Duties expanded to making critical path decisions on
existing and future deployments for mission critical intranet applications (Apache, Cold Fusion,
Oracle). Enhanced performance and security by implementing best practice processes in their
existing environment.
Catholic Store, Inc (Intranet/internet Server Farm)
Contracted to perform as the SA for a small business with an eCommerce website and
custom-built internal POS system. Encountered a flawed Windows 2000/SQL Server
installation which required a redeployment of the entire server environment to industry
standards and best practices, including the construction of a fully-functional, integrated and
secure domain/ADS environment, thus significantly reducing security risks and maintenance
costs. Positioned and provisioned a Cisco PIX firewall to ensure intranet and internet security.
Maintained network environment including keeping operating system, applications, and virus
software patched and updated.
