EXPERIENCE (Web/Database)
Sybase DBA/Programmer, CGI+Java+SQL+HTML Programmer
I'm working as a Sybase DBA and Webmaster at Indiana University--
Sigma Theta Tau. I set up Sybase SQL server 11.0 for Sparc-Solaris
2.x, Sybase Open Client/C 10.0.3, Web.SQL beta3, and NCSA HTTPD 1.4.2
from scratch. Judith Graves and I designed the Nursing Research
Registry RDBMS. Then I moved the old BRS flat-file DB to the new
Sybase DB. I tried two ways to move BRS DB to Sybase DB. One way was
to write several Perl scripts to transform the BRS DB data into Sybase
recognizable format, then use BCP utility to load the data. The second
way was to write Perl scripts to create SQL insert statements based on
the BRS data. After setting up the Database backend, I implemented the
front-end on the Web. Using CGI, Java, Sybase Web.SQL, and Sybase Open
Client, I made an interactive, dynamic web site. It is located at
http://www.stti.iupui.edu/nrr.
Visual Basic, PowerBuilder, Java Programmer
Further more, I started to develop the database front-end on Windows95
using Visual Basic 4 and PowerBuilder 4. Unlike the Web-version
front-end, this PC-version allows users to create ad-hoc query on the
fly, and also show graphical view of the database.
My final target is to write a Java-version front-end. Taking the
advantage of Java's platform independency, AWT graphics class library,
and networking class library, this version will be as powerful as the
PC-version and also accessable on the web by 32-bit Netscape 2.0. The
development tools I'm using are Sunsoft's JDK 1.0, JDBC, and Symantec
Cafe.
Movie Database Project
I worked on this project in a team from Jan. 1995 to May 1995 for the
course "Multimedia Database" when I was a graduate student at Computer
Science Dept, Indiana University--Bloomington. The objective was to
build a multimedia movie database, allowing users to query, view and
play movies under a multimedia environment. My work was to build the
database GUI using TCL/TK on SGI-IRIX systems. Within the Tcl/Tk
scripts, we used embedded SQL to query the Sybase movie database. The
updated version of the project has been put into use at the Main
Library of Indiana University. The specification of my work can be
reached at
http://www.stti.iupui.edu/joe/home/mmdb/home.html.
EXPERIENCE (Java)
Java Application Development
From July 1995 to Nov. 1995, Juan Villaci and I worked on a Java
project for Dr. Dennis Gannon at Computer Science Dept, Indiana
University--Bloomington. Our work is to write a Java applet to show
the call graph tree of any program on the web which allows users to
interact with it. The tree can be expanded and contracted
in response to user's mouse. Another task is to build a GUI for the
project. Our applet was first written in Java apha3, later upgraded to
JDK1.0 for Solaris 2.x. The program can be reached at
http://www.stti.iupui.edu/joe/home/cgviewer/. (32-bit Netscape 2.x is
required to run the program)
EXPERIENCE (Adminstration)
UNIX System Administrator, Webmaster
I also work as UNIX System Administrator and Webmaster at Indiana
University-- Sigma Theta Tau. My job includes: installing and
maintaining Solaris 2.x for Sparc workstations, network maintenance &
troubleshooting, Java pargramming, installing and maintaining Web
server, installing and maintaining Sybase SQL server, Perl
programming, Web programming(Java, CGI, HTML, Web.SQL), C/C++
Programming, SQL programming, and miscellaneous system administration
tasks.
Novell Netware Co-adminstrator
I also serve as a Novell Netware Co-adminstrator for Indiana
University-- Sigma Theta Tau, My job is to assist administering the
Novell network currently running Netware 3.1x. Providing customer
service for the staff is also one of my jobs.
EXPERIENCE (Teaching)
Teaching Assistant
From
August 1994
to May 1995, I was a Teaching Assistant at the
Computer Science Department of Indiana University
--Bloomington. I
taught two lab sections for the course "Introduction to
Microcomputers", including both Windows and Macintosh sections.
Summer Job
From
May 1995
to Sep. 1995, I worked at the Sabbagh Associates, Inc.
as an software engineer
. My work consisted of two parts. One was to
build a dynamic data structure to manage 3D grid data, and implement
the application program interface(API) for creating, storing,
retrieving, and querying 3D grid data. The second part was to generate
3D grids for the objects users created by Auto-CAD. The whole work was
based on the geomery library DT_NURBS and written in C and FORTRAN. I
also did some work on installing, compiling and testing software on
SUN and HP systems.
