Advisor/Manager, Innovation Processes and Technology Identification (2006-2012)

Lead R&D management processes including portfolio management, and stage gate; coordination of open innovation activities; identification and sourcing of external technology; and obtaining government funding for R&D projects. Provide support to business units with threats and opportunities assessments of bio-based chemicals and other emerging technologies, including techno-economic analysis. Provide analysis to business units in preparation of long range plans. Serve as lead interface between Chemicals R&D and IP legal.

* Identify alliance targets and facilitate discussions for potential investment in a plant to produce a bio-based raw material, reducing material cost in excess of 50%.

* Navigated a series of meetings with a number of venture capital funded companies, clarifying both the decision criteria and building consensus for next steps.

* Led company`s participation in five DOE grant proposals, including one with a former partner that received $18 MM in funding. Prepared grant proposal that was awarded $4.5 MM in funding in 2012.

* Established relationships and led effort with leading open innovation service providers that ultimately identified two suppliers for a custom catalyst ligand.

* Developed initial proposal and recommendation for company`s internal production of a bio-based fuel to meet its RFS2 requirements. Implementation currently underway.

Manager, New Product Commercialization (2002-2006)

Headed major new product commercialization initiatives; including several of the programs began in previous position. Directed full range of product commercialization including negotiating and maintaining third party product manufacturing and sales contracts, marketing, applications and process development.

* Continued global responsibilities for concrete chemicals business with sales approaching $20 MM

* Managed global commercialization of new dispersant technology for gypsum that allowed use of lower water levels and significant energy savings.

* Led multi-discipline inter-organization team developing new proprietary fuel desulfurization technology that offered a competitive option to fuel processers and refiners lacking a source of hydrogen for hydrotreating.

Development Manager (1998-2002)

Management of a group of fifteen (Ph.D.-level chemists/engineers and technicians) having commercial development and R&D responsibilities. Spearheaded development of new ideas into commercially viable products, including market development and business operations. Led inter-organization, inter-regional teams charged with development and commercialization of new products including implementation of manufacturing technologies. Programs included: Commercialization of novel dispersant technology into multiple global markets and applications; Intermediates for toner resins; and Development of opportunities for a new glycol in polyesters.

* Built global concrete chemicals business from start-up to four products and growing.

* Global commercialization of a new concrete water-reducing additive a year ahead of schedule. Achieved sales in U.S., Europe, S. Africa, S. America, and Australia.

* Secured contracts with four toll-manufacturers (U.S. and Europe), enabling timely production of new products while avoiding capital investment risk.

* Established strategic partnership with a European company to commercialize new technology related to automotive tires that offered an alternative to balancing with lead weights.

* Established strategic alliance to commercialize polymers for industrial, food, and pharmaceutical applications.

* Negotiated supply contract for a key raw material with Japanese supplier. Obtained pricing significantly lower that from U.S. and European suppliers.

* Co-led inter-company joint development project team of twenty that commercialized new concrete shrinkage/crack reducing additive. Achieved $1 MM in sales three years after idea first proposed.

* Secured joint development and commercialization agreements enabling faster new product launch.

* Negotiated technology/patent licenses, securing access to a new technology.

* Identified, evaluated, and recommended to executive management potential acquisition targets.

Project Manager, Technology Development & Planning (1993-1994)

Identified and assessed new externally developed technologies. Led interdisciplinary teams to evaluate new technologies. Supported R&D planning and budget preparation.

* Led project to develop new cetane improver for diesel fuel to technical success. Securing market acceptance and approvals from both refiners and OEMs.

* Represented company on industry task force on the effect of cetane on diesel emissions.

Supervised up to four technicians and research chemists. Projects included synthesis of novel monomers, non-phosgene routes to isocyanates, direct oxidation of propylene to propylene oxide, synthesis and product testing of novel gasoline octane improvers and diesel cetane improvers. Initiated and led external collaborations with universities, potential customers, and research institutes. Served as company representative on an industry task force on oxygenated diesel fuel.
