Job Market Paper: The Effects of Minimum Resale Price Maintenance on Prices and Output (with Alex MacKay)

This paper analyzes the empirical effects of minimum resale price maintenance (RPM) across a broad variety of household goods.

Using state-by-state variation in antitrust law in the wake of the 2007 Leegin Supreme Court decision, we find that prices increased

in states where minimum RPM is treated under the rule of reason. Moreover, we find evidence supporting procompetitive theories

of minimum RPM, as price increases were more often combined with quantity increases. We perform a welfare analysis, and we

conclude that minimum RPM was welfare-enhancing for consumers in the rule of reason states.
