COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes the integration of business skill within an approved work site related to business and industry. It entails the study of day-to-day problems and activities associated with the operation and management of a business. Employment by a company or agency is required. (Volunteering with a company or agency is subject to the prior approval of the Instructor.)

PREREQUISITE COURSES: A grade of "B" or better on BUS101 and a "B" or better on one of the following courses:

ACC101, ACC111, MGT101, or MKT101

RATIONALE: This course is designed to give students experience and exposure to the private or public sector of the business environment. This opportunity offers "hands-on" work experience that is supervised and properly evaluated allowing the student to grow professionally within the business community.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

SCWE Workbook with evaluation and daily activity log sheets.

REFERENCE MATERIALS:

Textbooks & materials from the prerequisite courses; BUS 101 and one of the following:

ACC101, ACC111, MGT101, or MKT101

REQUIRED COURSE ASSIGNMENTS: Each student is required to work 180 hours during the semester to satisfy the time requirements for this course. Students are required to notify the instructor of the job location, company or agency name, supervisor, and supervisor's mailing address and telephone number upon the semester commencement.

The instructor will make periodic site visits every other week during the semester coordinating with the student and/or supervisor in advance of an evaluation visit. The instructor should be notified immediately if the student's employment status changes. To reasonably accommodate the client company phone updates may be conducted as appropriate.

A typed or computer generated report will be turned in at the end of the semester. This report will include the following sections:

I. Introduction - Includes a description of the business, their major management goals or objectives, the organization's history and a chart showing company or agency organizational divisions. Describe the firm's measurement of employee performance and the firms competitive advantage.

II. A daily log of tasks performed, operation of specific equipment and/or informational systems, and techniques used to accomplish daily objectives.

III. Outline the marketing strategy of the firm. Identify factors that will/may impact the ability of the business to supply its good or service and that may affect the business's customer base. Include a discussion of any specific organizational or task related problems encountered and possible solutions in a constructive manner.

IV. List of employee benefits for temporary, as well as full-time employees, including such items as medical insurance, retirement plans, vehicle allowance, etc. Contrast your employer's benefits with another local employer within a similar business or industry.

V. Summarize and evaluate your work experience with possible means of improvement for any ineffective practice(s) noted.

EMPLOYER AND STUDENT SELF EVALUATION: Each Employment Supervisor will be given an evaluation sheet directly from the Course Instructor to be completed on each student and returned directly to the Course Instructor.

COURSE EVALUATION:

SCWE semester grades will be based on the following breakdown:

1) Final Report - 50%

2) Supervisor's Evaluation - 35%

3) Instructor's Visitation Evaluations - 15%

This course will be graded on a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) basis. Using the percentage breakdown, as shown above, each student must meet or exceed a 70% rating to be awarded a Satisfactory rating. This S/U grade will not impact a student's Grade Point Average.
