Product Design and Development Services for inventors, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. 3D digital design using SolidWorks, fabrication of conventional and rapid prototypes, testing and evaluation of components, identifying manufacturing resources, development of processes for production, engineering and patent documentation, cost estimates for business plans. Assisted customers in taking their ideas from concept to finished product and several products are now available commercially. In house design and development of BIKAR, a personal commuter vehicle based on a 3 wheel, motorcycle based, enclosed cabin concept that was presented at Innoventure 2011. Close association and involvement with CU-ICAR, Innoventure, Innomobility, and the SolidWorks User Group which I founded in 2002.

8/98-8/99 Citadel Manufacturing Co., Greenville, S.C.

President-Technical Manager- Small Business venture with partners to manufacture and market bronze letters for the cemetery industry. Developed the process for production and provided cost estimates for the business plan using permanent mold castings of bronze. Business closed 8/99. Used Solid Edge and Solid Works to design products and equipment and wax rapid prototypes to create molds by investment casting. Researched copper based alloys to identify best composition for permanent mold casting and designed/built small Permanent Mold Machine. Member AFS.

8/97-8/98 Cryovac Division, Sealed Air Corporation, Duncan, S.C.

Manufacturing Engineer- Eliminated 12-week delay to obtain prototype foam trays for customer approval by introducing 3-D Solid Modeling (SolidEdge) and Rapid Prototyping. Also eliminated 6 week design documentation delay by providing Solid Model directly to Mold Fabrication Shop and holding creation of Engineering Drawings until the final product was completed. Worked closely with Investment Casting Foundry to identify potential casting parts and transform them from fabricated parts, often reducing costs to 25-50% of original.

6/88-8/97 Manufacturing Engineering Manager- Managed group of 12 including; 3 Manufacturing Engineers, 4 Planner/Cost Estimators, 3 CNC Programmers, 1 Jig/Fixture Designer, 1 Secretary. Responsible for $750,000 Departmental Budget including administration and process improvement projects. Through process improvements, eliminated product price increases for three years. Implemented Cell Design, DNC System, Rotary Grinding, Horizontal Machining Center, and other process improvements in business dedicated to automated packaging equipment and production of co-extrusion dies for Cryovac production plants around the world. Member of Software Team that implemented new Business Software and coordinated review/upgrading of ~30,000 Engineering Drawings and Process Plans for start-up. Responsible for Plant Security. Chairman of Corporate ID Badge Project, Member Product Safety Committee and Engineering Standards Committee. Chairman-United Way Campaign 1994. Chairman of 3-D CAD Study Committee.

2/87-6/88 Product Development Engineer- Designed and developed automated packaging equipment including a taped bag loader that is still one of the largest selling products produced. Studied and developed a machine for removal of water from packages after hot water shrinking. Simultaneous Engineering efforts earned promotion to position of Manufacturing Engineering Manager.

With staff of 5-7 employees professionally restored 25+ antique automobiles, several winning national show awards. Hands on work on complete process including mechanical rebuilding, electrical, body work, painting, and assembly. Very satisfying technically, but financially unsuccessful. Closed business 12/86.

Michelin Americas Research and Development Corp (M.A.R.C.) Greenville, S.C.

1980-1982 Section Leader-Tire Design Department- (FPD-BE) Supervised group of 12 designers/drafters responsible for tire RD documentation. Coordinated with in house Machine Shop to have Prototype Molds manufactured. Managed design archives.

Section Leader- Passenger Car Tire Testing-(FTW) Lived in France for 19 months learning testing procedures; returned to Greenville to start up Laurens Test Track Facility and create test group responsible for adherence and special testing. Responsible for track facilities, hiring personnel (drivers, technicians, engineers, maintenance), purchasing and equipping vehicles and analytical tools, setting up test procedures and reporting methods. Heavy instrumentation of vehicles and statistical analysis of results.
