Employment Experience:
Jan `98 to Dec `12: Analytical Research Advisor, STC-R (SABIC Technology Center - Riyadh) Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), Riyadh, KSA.
Duties/Responsibilities/Accomplishments include:
* Mentoring nine-member team focusing on GC, GC/MS, LC, LC/MS and GPC aspects of the Analytical Section responsible for polymer (PET, LLDPE, HDPE, PP, PS, HIPS, PEG and PVC), monomer and catalyst analysis and characterization.
* Developing, validating, maintaining and continual improvement of analytical techniques including trace contaminant analysis by headspace analysis, purge-and-trap techniques, thermal desorption-cryofocusing, liquid automated sampler and gas sampling loops.
* Obtained (2003) and maintained ISO17025 accreditation for Separations Laboratory.
* Conducted bulk and trace analysis of petrochemical polymer precursors (monomers, co-monomers catalysts) and polymers for trace contaminants (food contact issues).
* In-depth involvement in Customer Support with new and modified product introduction including plant visits, instruction and correlation efforts between laboratories with lab personnel.
* Troubleshooting process problems . Innovative approach to problem-solving, thinking inside and -outside the box.-
* Expert in statistical quality methods, uncertainty determinations and method validation and optimization using experimental design techniques.
* Training plant and research personnel by offering intensive short courses in GC and GC/MS operation and troubleshooting.
Oct `95 to Dec `97: Quality Control Auditor, Blue Ridge Paper Co. (formerly Champion International Paper Co.), Canton, NC.
* Collected and analyzed stock samples - fiber and filler, often dyed - for the calibration of on-line consistency and freeness sensors/controllers. Maintained database.
* Contributed to paper machine trials targeting high quality, low pick printing papers - microscopic fiber analysis, starch sizing analysis, optical scanner/printing analysis of picks using image analysis software.
* Initiated database for market pulp evaluations by pilot scale Valley beater trials, refining series, hand sheet preparation, testing and data presentation.
Feb `82 to Feb `95: Research Associate/Product Development, Ecusta Division, P.H.Glatfelter Co., (formerly of Olin Corp.) Pisgah Forest, NC.
* Synthesized a series of compounds capable of altering cigarette sidestream smoke aroma without substantially effecting the mainstream smoke taste, US patent 4,804,002 (1989) and analytical methodology to measure above component in cigarette paper (HPLC and CE) and its pyrolysis products in sidestream cigarette smoke (GC and GC/MS).
* Spearheaded the commercialization of the world`s first low sidestream cigarette paper. Numerous machine trials and heavy interaction with tobacco company counterparts.
* Developed computer-vision based technology (near infrared region) to monitor burning cigarettes in contact with flammable furniture mock-ups to determine the propensity of individual cigarette formulations to cause ignitions. Optimized formulation to minimize number of ignitions.
* Participated in numerous task force efforts to resolve crisis situations involving specific products at specific customers - white tipping flare-up, cork tipping coal fallout, high porosity plugwrap dusting, cigarette paper spotting (clove-flavored cigarettes, Indonesia), assorted runnability issues.
