SUMMARY

Ph.D.-level electrical engineer with proven communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment within a team framework. Recent career experience in diverse fields: semiconductor fabrication, biochemical sensing, and nuclear power/space propulsion.

EDUCATIONUniversity of Virginia Charlottesville, VA

Ph.D., Electrical and Computer Engineering, August 2005 8/97 - 8/04Dissertation work involved design and construction of superconducting receiver arrays operating at 1.5 THz, intended to fly on NASA’s SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) mission. These were the first terahertz receiver arrays to incorporate hot-electron bolometer (HEB) mixers. Louis T. Rader Award for Excellence in Electrical Engineering, May 2000.Extensive coursework including microwave engineering, electromagnetic field theory, high-frequency devices, microwave amplifier design, solid state physics, semiconductor theory, and digital signal processing.

M.S., Electrical Engineering, May 1999

Yale University New Haven, CT

B.S., Applied Physics - Solid State & Quantum Electronics 8/89 - 5/93

RECENT PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Senior Engineer (B) 8/05 - present

Bechtel Bettis Atomic Power Lab supports the Nuclear Navy and NASA’s JIMO mission. West Mifflin, PAMember of the Advanced Materials Systems Integration group in the Materials Technology activity.Department of Energy L security clearance.

Electrical/Optical Engineer 6/01 - 5/03

Veridian Systems Division performed scientific research under U.S. government contract. Charlottesville, VAAnalysis performed for the Fiber Optics Biosensor Group led the team to research a planar optical structure. A sensor based upon this design was produced for Veridian by a commercial fabrication facility.Lead author for Multiple-mode planar waveguide sensor, fabrication materials and techniques, U.S. and E.U. patents pending.

Graduate Research Assistant 8/97 - 5/04

University of Virginia Microfabrication Laboratory Charlottesville, VAProfessional knowledge of many sub-fields of electrical engineering: semiconductor fabrication and devices, RF and microwaves, superconductivity, terahertz technology, and optics.Nine publications in professional journals and conference proceedings.

High School Physics Teacher 8/93 - 6/97

Cape Henry Collegiate School is a National Blue Ribbon School with 700 students, K-12. Virginia Beach, VADeveloped all of the lab and classroom curricula for 9th Grade Science, Physics, Honors Physics, and AP Physics courses. Generally taught five sections of these classes, including four separate preps.
