Work

Summer Research Intern May 2012 August 2012

Experience

To facilitate Health Informatics, two major issues need to be resolved: a) e ective representation

of complex healthcare system, and b) privacy-safe data publication and sharing. My project at

ORNL involved these two major issues.

LinkedIn Corp.

Summer Software Engineering Intern May 2011 August 2011

LinkedIn is a professional social network platform provider, located in Mountain View, CA. At

LinkedIn, my job was to develop Related Searches module, which recommends relevant search

keywords. For instance, if a user types hadoop, the engine should provide hbase, map reduce,

etc. The engine is designed using Pig, Hadoop and R, and currently now on production, improving

CTR (Click Through Ratio) 20 % and coverage 50%. Please see the SIGIR 2012 paper.

Olaworks Inc.

Embedded System Developer August 2008 August 2009

Olaworks is a high-tech startup company in South Korea, which provides object detection/recognition

solutions in images and motion pictures. My job was to import facial recognition engine into mo-

bile phones, which requires extensive knowledge of speed/memory optimization. I successfully led

LG Smartphone Project (6 months), helped Samsung Digital Camera Project, Motorola Project,

Panorama Engine Project, and developed multiple Demo applications.

Dynamic User Demands Estimation (Lifetime Modeling)

Supervisor: Prof. Joydeep Ghosh Aug 2011 Aug 2012

Users Demands dynamically change. For example, insurance customers purchase di erent goods

as time proceeds. Using customers pro les and demand trajectory information, we are modeling

simultaneous clustering on static and dynamic features. The model is based on heterogeneous

Hidden Markov Models, and is regularized by their pro le information.

A nity estimation on items/users in the Korean handset market

Supervisor: Prof. Joydeep Ghosh Jan 2011 May 2011

Today s handset market is inundated with too many handsets, hampering users to choose the best

product. Based on handset and user pro les, we modeled their purchasing behavior and made

a recommendation engine, which can be applied in Tele- or Direct-marketing. The algorithm

performs signi cantly better than just recommending popular items, and solves a new type of

cold-start problem.

Predictive modeling of Smartphone purchases

Supervisor: Prof. Joydeep Ghosh August 2010 December 2010

Using massive amount of customer information and call data, our project covered a) prediction

on Smartphone purchase per user, b) forecast on Smartphone market size change, and c) analysis

on major clusters in Smartphone users. Currently we are looking into Bayesian a nity estimation

between users and handsets. The challenges in this project include a) handling of high dimensional

imbalanced data, b) deliberate preprocessing of data, c) interpretable results with high accuracy.
