Resume:

Michael A Kaplan

*******.*.******@*****.***

EDUCATION:

MSE (2006) in Computer Science from The Johns Hopkins University (GPA 3.8)

Independent Study: Low-Overhead Routing for High-Perf ormance Wireless Mesh Networks

BS (2003) in Computer Science from University of Virginia (GPA 3.74)

Thesis: Biosensor Toolkit: Multiobjective Optimization for Signal Pattern Matching

PRESENT POSITION AND DUTIES:

Telcordia Technologies, Senior Research Scientist (2009 Present):

Telcordia Technologies, Research Scientist (2006 2009):

Technical leader for WIreless Scalable EmulatoR (WISER), a commercially sold product

that provides scalable emulation of WIN-T and FCS military networks. Managed team of

six developers and led software integration efforts. Key contributor to MAC waveform

models, system architecture, and implementation. Worked jointly with partner company

Candela Technologies to develop the system, while establishing strong inter-company

relations. Lead presenter for numerous demonstrations including MILCOM 2007 and

2008, PM-FCS, ARL, CERDEC, and IEEE Sarnoff Symposium. System is currently

deployed at CERDEC, Lockheed Martin, and General Dynamics. WISER has since

become an integral part of Telcordia s PILSNER test and evaluation efforts.

Network analyst and developer f or the Network Analysis Integration Lab (NAIL) at Fort

Monmouth, NJ. Studied and evaluated brigade sized FCS routing performance using

QualNet emulation. Worked jointly with contractors from Scientific Research Corporation

(SRC) and QED Systems. Created a robust and highly flexible tool for generating FCS

QualNet configurations automating a process which previously was unmanageable and

highly burdensome due to the immense quantity of FCS input data. The tool is now

widely used by both contractors as well as Telcordia on various NAIL technical tracks,

and is showcased as a key artifact of the lab. Other key role included routing

convergence analysis for WNW and SRW networks. Documented reports and

viewgraphs which were presented in weekly technical reviews. W orked diligently in a

high-intensity, high-demand environment as was the nature of project.

Key contributor to Phase 2 of DARPA's Situation-Aware Protocols In Edge Network

Technologies (SAPIENT) a research effort aimed to improve application performance in

wireless networks via network identification and machine-learning at the lower-levels of

the network stack. Became a specialist in the analysis and implementation of layer-3

protocols, namely Split-TCP and ARQ, protocols used to facilitate TCP under high-loss,

high delay conditions. Obtained expertise in the nuances of TCP. Worked diligently with

other team members responsible for related modules to yield a very high-performance

system. Served as a test-lead during integration working with three other team members.

Developed and ran test cases and produced CMMi documentation. Also developed initial

versions of Bandwidth and BER estimators for network identification. Worked with BBN

contractors on mathematical modules such as Kalman filters. Project served as flagship

for Telcordia CMMi accreditation, achieving level-3. Project awarded Phase 3 for FY09.

Key contributor to several classified efforts including Dynamic Quarantine of Worms

(DQW) and Tactical Control System (TCS). Designed and developed new software

system components. Worked with other Telcordia team members and subcontractors to

expand and improve existing software components. W orked with members of the

government IT&E team as well as researchers from our main subcontractor to maximize

the performance of our system.

Michael A Kaplan -1- December, 2008

Team member for Tactical Wireless Network Assurance (TWNA). Project funded by US

Army. Integrated, tested, and debugged intrusion detection software for Hazy Sighted

Link State (HSLS) routing protocol. Incorporated and studied HSLS detectors within

OPNET and documented results for CERDEC.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE:

The Johns Hopkins University, Teaching and Research Assistant (2004 2006):

Key contributor to Survivable Mesh (SMesh). Developed and implemented a kernel

routing module which improved throughput by a factor of 3-5x depending upon the

number of hops between source and destination. Research advisor: Yair Amir.

Taught and graded courses in Object Oriented systems, Storage Systems, and

Intermediate Programming.

General Dynamics, Software Engineer, Advanced Information Systems (2003 2004):

Worked as a developer on a large-scale classified software project with 15 team

members. C# development, Implemented GPS calculation algorithms among other

modules.
