Responsibilities:
Administrative and Technical Director of a 65 FTE Laboratory Services Department within a 155-bed Children`s Hospital and five off-site Laboratories with 11 direct reports. Total laboratory operating budget of $12 M and total revenues $17.5 M.
Services overseen include basic routine clinical chemistry, hematology, Microbiology, Virology, Transfusion Services, Anatomic Pathology Services, Cytogenetics, and Molecular Genetics. This includes new test development, QC, QA, compliance, billing, and team development.
Accomplishments:
In collaboration with the Medical Staff, reduced the number of reference laboratories used from 62 to 12, resulting in $400 K savings in FY 2000-2001. Evaluated and brought in-house high volume tests previously sent to reference laboratories. In 2010, again consolidated reference lab testing to one primary reference lab and 4 minor labs for a savings of over $500 K.
Reduced operating budget by 1.4 M in 3 years. Improved operating margin from 11% (FY 96-97) to 23% (FY 01-02).
Achieved College of American Pathologists Accreditation in 2001.
Planned and implemented Laboratory OutReach Program, resulting in over $5 million in new revenues over the past 3 years.
In collaboration with Information Services, planned, tested, and soon to implement Dayton Children`s first interface to a major multi-site pediatric practice EMR for orders and results.
Facilitated the complete renovation of the laboratories, including a 50% increase in size, using Lean Concepts.
Built and implemented 2 laboratory information systems (SunQuest Flexilab for clinical lab and TamTron PowerPath for Anatomic Pathology). Developed training program for nursing to facilitate order entry on the units.

Research has included development of electrochemical assays in whole blood and the characterization of various lipoprotein changes in various disease states such as acute graft-vs-host disease in pediatric bone marrow transplant patients.
Accomplishments:
Planned and implemented budgetary cost reductions totaling 40% over 3 years for the Division of Clinical Chemistry with no loss of service support.
Facilitated the development and implementation of the redesign/renovation and consolidation of basic laboratory services. Directed this laboratory for the first year.
Facilitated a multi-disciplinary group charged with the development of institutional Point-of-Care Testing Programs. Five Programs were implemented within five years.
6 years experience in clinical trials for the pharmaceutical industry, Federal Government, diagnostics companies and various clinical departments within the College of Medicine.
