Institution Description: Northern Seminary, formerly Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, is a private institution affiliated with the American Baptist Churches, U.S.A.

History: Established, chartered, incorporated, and offered first instruction at postsecondary level 1913; awarded first degree 1916; added 4 year college 1920; absorbed Norwegian Baptist Seminary (founded 1871) 1956; moved to present campus and college separated from Seminary to become Judson College 1963; present name adopted 2004..

Institutional Structure: Governing board: Board of Trustees. Representation: 61 trustees, including president of the alumni association, president of the seminary, dean of the seminary, full time instructional faculty member, 2 students. 7 ex officio. 2 Regional Executive Ministers Advisory Council representatives. 7 honorary members. 52 voting.

Surrounding community: Lombard, population 40,000, is located within Chicago metropolitan area. Served by mass transit bus and train system; airport 18 miles from campus, passenger rail service 3 miles from campus.

Publications: Sources of information about Northern Seminary include The American Baptist Magazine.

Library Collections: 51,343 volumes. 1,636 audio/video tapes. 299 current periodical subscriptions. 14 computer work stations. Students have access to the Internet at no charge.

Most important special holdings include Abraham H. Cassel Collection of 16th-19th century theological books and pamphlets; Ora Huston Collection of English Bibles; Baptist historical records.
