1996 2005 Founder, Balance Day Spa ~ (www.balancedayspa.com)
I have experience in all areas of starting and running a business including business
development, client attraction and retention, product and equipment selection, inventory
management, retail sales, scheduling, staff training, human resources, customer service,
marketing, PR, finance, payroll and management. Under my leadership, the company grew
from a one person company offering massage therapy to a staff of nearly fifty that offered
full day spa services in a 6000 square foot facility. A tremendous growth experience on
many levels, both personally and professionally. I sold the business in 2005 after revenues
had reached over $1.6 million annually to open my consulting and training business.
1998 present Freelance Writer ~ (http://blog.spalutions.com)
W riting for these publications (Dermascope, Spa Management Journal, Skin Inc., Bizlife,
Massage Magazine, Massage & Bodywork, Massage Therapy Journal and numerous other
local consumer magazines) has enhanced my career and reputation on a local and national
level. I have been quoted or featured in a number of other industry publications including
DAYSPA, Skin Inc, Spa Magazine, Spa Finder, American Spa and Nail Pro. I am also the
Co-Editor for Day Spa/Medical Spa Business Bible which is being published by the Day Spa
Association and have released a CD, Just Breathe: Guided Meditations for Inner Peace
1998 2001, 2004 - 2005 Instructor, Guilford Technical Community College
This program enriched my own professional knowledge of general business, professional
ethics and communications through teaching each subject to new massage therapy
students. It also allowed me to re-experience the wonder of massage therapy through the
students' eyes. I am very proud to have been a part of developing the initial curriculum and
course offerings for this professional massage training program.
1999 present Reviewer, Milady Salonovations, Health Positive!, Lippincott
Reviewing textbook drafts, video scripts, and continuing education courses for these
publishers has given me great insight into various aspects of training needs within the spa
industry. Subjects have included spa and salon business start-up, marketing and business
development, professional ethics, various massage and spa modalities, general skin care,
skin care machines and others.
1994 -- 1996 Massage Therapist, Various
Before I opened my own business, I had the opportunity to work in seven different locations
and several types of businesses as an independent contractor. This experience allowed me
to learn about various types of work environments including a tanning salon, hair salon, day
spa, gym and my own private residence. This was invaluable in understanding the many
challenges that smaller businesses and individual practitioners face.
