I lead my squad in combat and I was responsible for my Marines' well being and training along with ensuring they where mission capable. I also wrote combat orders, ran the defenses and organized the supplies for a 54 man patrol base in Afghanistan, and was required to be the most knowledgeable person on the employment and operations of the 240 calibre medium machine gun, the 50 calibre machine gun and the Mk 19 a 40 millimeter grenade launcher machine gun.

The machine gunner is responsible for the tactical employment of the 7.62 millimeter medium machine gun, the 50 calibre and 40 millimeter heavy machine gun, and their support vehicles. Machine gunners provide direct fire in support of the rifle and light armored reconnaissance squads/ platoons/companies and the infantry reconnaissance battalions. They are located in the weapons platoons of the rifle and light armored reconnaissance companies and the weapons companies of the infantry battalions. Non Commissioned officers are assigned as squad leaders/ section leaders.
