MUSICPLAYGROUND
As chief designer and engineer, I pioneered advancements that enabled
high quality interactive music software for education and entertainment. I
designed the prototype that inspired Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Projects
include:
Designed and co-developed the core audio/video engine. This consisted
of a reusable, multithreaded object architecture that rendered fully
synchronized and seekable streams of audio, video, midi, graphics, and
text; a real-time interactive performance engine that triggered audio
and graphics via custom USB device input; and significant
enhancements to audio and visual fidelity over previous industry
technologies.
(C++, DirectX, COM, and Win32)
Designed the security system for the protected delivery and use of the
company's media assets. This included a seekable, streaming encryption
system, digitally signed media and executables, and a licensing system
that implemented business rules on the permitted use of content.
(C++, DirectX, COM, and Win32)
Specified a complete e-commerce website, which permitted purchase
and fulfillment of hard goods and real-time, secure fulfillment of
software and media.
(ASP.NET, SQL Server)
Improved the efficiency and reliability of the company's software
development and media production processes, resulting in a complete
product development cycle of two weeks (including QA), and a scalable
media production system that produced over 1000 interactive songs,
videos, and slide shows.
Troubleshot and solved many problems company-wide, including
significantly improving input latency, increasing reliability of the master
clock, USB driver issues, synchronization issues among media streams,
and website implementation issues.
Results: Published seven interactive music products, including a joint
project with Brian May (of Queen), and a project for the movie Rock
Star (Mark Wahlberg/Jennifer Aniston). Endorsements and praise from
Roger Daltrey of The Who, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, and
Paul McCartney (among other artists).

THE INTERACTIVE MEDIA LABORATORY AT DARTMOUTH
Designed and developed the interactive multimedia framework for IML s
healthcare education programs (C++, Win32, QuickTime). Based on this
work, Simon and Schuster published several titles, including HIV&AIDS, a
training program for medical professionals. These programs were praised
by the US Director of the CDC for their educational and emotional impact.
THE SYNCLAVIER COMPANY
I designed the next-generation object oriented framework for a line of
professional audio and video software in the Synclavier product family.
The modern digital sampling workstation was invented at Synclavier/New
England Digital, and it has been used by professionals around the world
(e.g., Sting, Stevie Wonder, and George Lucas on the Star Wars films).
BELL LABORATORIES/BELLCORE
I conducted research into the applications of artificial intelligence for
education. I also designed the software for a real-time telephony network
signal processing and test system. It was the largest working object-
oriented software architecture at that time. It received international
attention and influenced the evolution of the C++ language and modern
object-oriented development principles/practices. I spoke at national and
international conferences and published several papers on this work.
