ABOUT ALEX MARCUS
Alex Marcus is a violinist, guitarist, singer and songwriter based in Brooklyn, NY.
Classically trained from the age of four, Alex has worked with an eclectic variety of
artists, including country music legend Hank III, director Richard Linklater, and
playwright Nick Jones. He has performed on CBS The Late Late Show and at many
leading New York venues.
He studied at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and earned a master s degree
in teaching from Pace University in New York. He has studied with jazz violinist
Christian Howes, jazz pianist Dave Frank, and classical violinist Charles Johnston, a
student of David Nadien (former concertmaster of the NY Philharmonic under Leonard
Bernstein).
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Austin School of Music North (Austin, TX): taught classical violin to children and
adults, all levels (2001-2004).
Private Studio (New York City): teaches classical violin and improv to children and
adults, all levels (2004-2012).
TELEVISION APPEARANCES
Hank III Band: performed national tour as violinist with shows at The Roxy (L.A.),
Billy Bob s (Dallas), and other major venues, with special guest appearance on The Late
Late Show with Craig Kilborn (Summer 2004).
Up to Speed (directed by Richard Linklater): performed as guest violinist during New
York City episode (Hulu Network, April 2012).
REGIONAL VENUES
The Gentlemen Callers Band: lead vocalist and violinist for original country band
with performances at The Bell House, Union Hall, Nitehawk Cinema, and other notable
venues; featured in Time Out New York (2011-2013).
Grizzly Adams: a true story of bears, brawn and brain injuries (book and lyrics
by Nick Jones, music by Corn Mo, directed by Lila Neugebauer): performed in house
band for staged reading at Joe s Pub (January 2012).
EDUCATION
Classical Violin: studied with Monte Belknap (1991-1995) at the Cincinnati
Conservatory of Music; currently studies with Charles Johnston (2011-2013).
Jazz Violin and Improv: currently studies with Christian Howes (2011-2013) and
Dave Frank (2012-2013) in New York City.
REFERENCES
Dave Frank: authored best-selling Hal Leonard book and video series, Joy of Improv
and Breakthrough to Improv; was Associate Professor of Piano at Berklee College of
Music in Boston from 1987-2004 and co-founder of the New York School of Jazz
(1983-86).
Charles Johnston: studied with Marvin Morgenstern (violin and chamber music),
Lotte Bamberger (chamber music), and the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic
under Bernstein, David Nadien (violin). 20+ years of training in Alexander Technique.
