In my dissertation, “A Multi-Scale Model of Brain White-Matter Structure and Its Solution from Diffusion MRI”, I develop a mathematical model for the millimeter-scale structure of the whole human brain and a set of algorithms for fitting this model to diffusion MRI scans of an individual's brain. I collaborate in my academic work with human brain researchers (including medical physicists, psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and statisticians) both locally and around the world. I write and run programs on Linux and Mac OS X systems in C/C++, Python, Matlab, and bash to process MRI data from hospitals and research facilities in Providence, RI; St. Louis, MO; Edinburgh; and Cape Town. My work involves frequent presentations, including over 20 one-hour talks given to my research group and others since 2007. I also maintain an internal wiki for documentation within my research group and mentor an undergraduate student.
My personal activities include volunteer service in academic and community organizations, cooking and entertaining, mountain biking and bike commuting, dancing, creating computer- and mathematics-based visual art and music, collecting and listening to music, attending local music shows, skiing, storytelling, backpacking, travel, and karaoke. I used Ubuntu Linux exclusively for personal computing from 2005 until supplementing it with Mac OS X in 2007.
