EDUCATION University of California, Los Angeles, CA

M.S. Electrical Engineering

Expected Graduation: June 2012

UCLA GPA: 3.60/4.0

San Jose State University, San Jose, CA

B.S. Electrical Engineering

Graduated May 2010, Cum Laude

SJSU GPA: 3.63/4.0

Relevant Coursework:

Embedded Systems, Analog/Digital Circuit Design, VLSI Design, DSP, Digital

Logic, Linear Systems, and Network Analysis.

SKILLS Languages: HTML, PHP, JavaScript, C, C++, and Verilog.

Software: MATLAB, PSpice, MS Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop.

PROJECTS VO2 Max Estimation, 2012-Current

Directed a team tasked with utilizing the Android platform to adapt the YMCA

protocol to a custom built stationary cycle and accurately estimate a user s

maximum oxygen update (VO2), an indicator of human endurance.

Running Biomechanics, 2011-Current

Designed a small, lightweight module used to measure the fine movements of

a runner s feet. Performed tests to determine the accuracy of algorithms able

to calculate a runner s efficiency based off data extracted from the module.

Energy Monitoring for Stationary Cycle, 2011-2012

Created an inexpensive system which can determine cadence, distance

traveled, and energy input to a stationary exercise cycle. Developed Android

software to wirelessly interact with the cycle and record extracted metrics.

Simultaneous Wireless Recharge and Data Transfer, 2011

Developed an isolated board which can: identify a device via RFID tag, begin

inductive charging, and simultaneously capture data via Bluetooth.

Fully-Differential High-Speed High-Precision Amplifier, 2010

Designed and simulated two Fully-Differential High-Speed High-Precision

Amplifiers. One aimed at minimizing settling time given a set power budget

and the second aimed at minimizing power for a given settling time.

Formula Hybrid Car Project, 2009-2010

Electronics Team Lead to a multidisciplinary team of engineers responsible for

the design and build of a hybrid race car. Placed second in the international,

inter-collegiate competition held at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Mahdi Ashktorab

EXPERIENCE Wireless Health Institute, Los Angeles, CA

Graduate Student Researcher, 3/11-Current

Designed, implemented, and tested novel embedded system technologies

and pursued research interests under the guidance of Professor William

Kaiser.

Conducted research in human biomechanics and developed a novel,

inexpensive system to monitor energy expenditure and to estimate an

individual s endurance.

Worked with Olympic runners and developed technologies to extract

critical running metrics used to determine running efficiency and

technique.

Perot Systems Government Services, Moffett Field, CA

Systems Administrator, 6/07-7/2010

Hardwired control circuit of a to-scale model Boeing 747 cockpit.

Build and disassembled hardware components of PCs, laptops, servers,

and workstations.

Created interactive web-forms and databases using: HTML, PHP, and

JavaScript.

IEEE San Jose State University, San Jose, CA

Public Relations Officer, 6/09-5/2010

Managed industry contacts to the biggest student branch in the Bay Area.

Organized technical conferences and fundraising initiatives to support the

members of IEEE and the electrical engineers at SJSU.

Took an active role in helping the greater community through information

outreach.

Won the IEEE Region 6 Central Area outstanding student chapter award.

NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA

DEVELOP Intern, 6/06-9/2006

Participated in a student-run, student-led NASA scientific research group

in central Nevada.

Used NASA satellite imagery and computer analysis to find statistical

correlation between various fire factors of previous wildfires located in

Nevada.

The results were published and presented at the 2006 Joint Workshop on

NASA Biodiversity

NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA

DEVELOP Intern, 6/05-9/2005

Published and presented a scientific research paper at the American

Geophysical Union in 2005 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA.

Used NASA satellite imagery to map specific plant locations and densities

in Utah.

Collected field data in Utah and used it to run an accuracy assessment on

the predictive coverage map of non-native plant species.

ACHIEVEMENTS SJSU Dean Scholar, 2009

IEEE Member, 2008-2012

Phi Kappa Phi Member, 2009-2012

Tau Beta Pi Member, 2009-2012

Semi-Finalist at the California State Speech Championship, 2005
