Resume Adriaan (Arjan) van de Ven
Summary
I am a senior software engineer with extensive experience in open source software development
in general and the Linux kernel in particular. My main interests and experiences are in the areas
of computer security, component and system performance and in organizing high impact
changes in complex projects. My experience ranges from assembly level performance tuning to
leading projects such as operating system security breach prevention by integrating technologies
into multiple open source projects; and meeting customers and partners to understand their
exact needs.
Work Experience:
Senior Staff Software Engineer
Intel International BV
January 2006 - current
In the role of staff software engineer I am working on improving Linux to work better with Intel
hardware as well as diagnosing and fixing performance issues that customers had with Intel
hardware. In addition I m participating in a team that gives design input for future hardware
designs to the respective design teams and that analyzes changing trends in the Linux space for
their impact on the behavior of Intel hardware.
Principal Software Engineer: Quality Architect
Red Hat, Inc
November 2004 November 2005
In the role of Quality Architect I was responsible for creating and optimizing Quality Assurance
processes for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux product, such as the process to test and release
software updates.
I have also been responsible for the creation of two highly used automated QA software tools
that both significantly increase test coverage and reduce the time spent on basic testing tasks. A
sizable part of my role consisted in rolling out various changes in the processes and getting buy-
in for these changes throughout the entire engineering organization.
Principal Software Engineer: Kernel integrator / maintainer
Red Hat, Inc
January 2001 October 2004
In this role I was responsible for creating the kernel packages for Red Hat Linux versions 7.1 to
9 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 2.1 and 4 and various versions of Fedora Core. This
role included working with Product Management to get a requirement set, creating an
engineering plan and leading the execution thereof. In addition this role included creating and
integrating Red Hat specific feature work and fixing bugs in a wide range of subsystems and
drivers of the Linux kernel. My work in the processes in these areas are still being used as the
basis for the current Red Hat Enterprise Linux development and maintenance procedures.
The things I enjoyed most about this role were working with the various hardware and software
partners, the direct customer feedback, working with the customer facing support people and
the various special projects (for example the NPTL and Exec-Shield projects) that I could have
a leading or high-impact role in.

Oc Technologies
January 1999 December 2000
In this job, which was a logical continuation of my masters thesis work, I worked in a project
that did research in the field of high performance image processing implementations in the field
of printing and copying. This work included creating assembly and MMX implementations of
various algorithms as well as full redesigns of algorithms and parts of the image processing
pipeline to meet the aggressive performance target.
