Community Service. Teaching SOWK 8510, Supervision and Personnel Administration, as well as

SOWK 8700, Social Work and Addictive Disorders (Spring Semester 2009), in the Master s of Social

Work degree program. Academic adviser to M.S.W. students, member of Integrated Task Force and

Curriculum committees within the School of Social Work, facilitator for a new interdisciplinary

public education on addictions and mental health needs of special populations. Consultative

projects and program evaluations provided for business and industry, with particular

emphasis upon diversity training and multicultural competence. Workshops, in-services, and

non-profit agencies and university groups. Speaking appearances and projects spanning 20

countries in Europe, North America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and in 33 states within

the USA. Private practice emphasizing chemical health recovery, professional supervision

aftercare case management, individual and group therapy, and family interventions with

substance misusers.

Analyst, interviewer, and coder for the San Francisco Qualitative Interview Study, funded by

the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and other advocacy groups to expand primary

prevention among racially diverse client cohorts in the Bay Area (N=96).

Program Director for a new, publicly-funded 24-bed residential treatment center for

substance abuse rehabilitation. Supervised an 18-member team that included physicians,

nurses, social workers, counselors, and support staff in the first Francophone version of the

Minnesota model of chemical dependency treatment.

Began as the evaluation counselor, then promoted to primary therapist. In that role (1987-

89), served as primary case manager in the first residential substance abuse treatment

center serving gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans-gendered (GLBT) persons. Gave

bibliotherapy lectures, facilitated group therapy, conducted individual and conjoint sessions,

and developed patient treatment plans. Served as Lead Researcher for a seven-site

outcome study conducted by the Addiction Recovery Foundation. As Director (1989-91),

held responsibility for referral development, educational outreach, reviewing service

relationships, and representing Pride Institute at national conferences and other public

forums. Co-authored the first longitudinal study of the GLBT community in recovery (Ratner,

Kosten, McLellan, Roiblatt, Kay, & Magnan, 1991).

Legislative Director

Devised and directed the legislative agenda for a non-profit organization representing twelve

Minnesota state colleges and universities. Supervised 7 student interns and 20-25 legislative

session monitors. Responsible for public speaking and testimony preparation for State

Capitol hearings as well as policy workshops at constituent schools. Drafted and lobbied to

passage legislation providing solar tax credits and energy assistance, mandating soil loss

limits and prairie restoration, regulating nuclear waste shipments and storage, and granting

consumers right-to-know about toxins produced and stored in their communities.

Administrative Intern

Conceived, developed, and wrote a grant which funded a pre-trial diversion program for

adolescent offenders and established the first social work unit within the Juvenile Defender s

office. Authored a 150-page program handbook detailing Minnesota s residential resources for

youth offenders. Project has since been expanded into an entire social service division within

the Office of the Public Defender of Hennepin County.
