Work History:

June 9, 2008 until May 28, 2010: Smaller Learning Communities Program

Manager, Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, Nashville, Tn.

Researched, developed, and implemented activities to improve student academic

achievement in twelve inner city public high schools with enrollments of 1,000 or

more students. During this process worked with academic subject level

coordinators, career/technical coordinators, administrators, and teachers at all

levels. These schools are implementing small learning communities structures such

as freshman academies, multi-grade career academies organized around career

interests or other themes, houses in which small groups of students remain

together throughout high school, and autonomous schools-within-a-school, as well

as personalization strategies, such as student advisories, family advocate systems,

and mentoring programs. In this process, developed curriculum, provided quality

professional development, managed teams, wrote grants, surveyed teachers and

students, mentored teachers, worked with city agencies to create six

business/industry partnership councils, created and implemented a school

volunteers website of over 500 professionals, worked with a variety of post

secondary opportunities in an effort to provide multiple options for students for

dual enrollment, dual credit, pre-apprenticeships, internships, etc. Developed and

implemented a hands on, show and tell ninth grade career awareness fair for 3260

freshmen, that involved over 300 business/industry volunteers representing 270

careers.

1991 til Present (ongoing): National professional development provider and

educational consultant, author, motivational speaker, teacher, technical assistance

provider, and trainer providing services for educators, administrators, labor unions,

apprenticeship programs, and industry through curriculum development, program

development, grant writing, program evaluation, and program implementation in

the areas of high school redesign, freshman transition, workplace readiness,

innovative teaching techniques, career and technical education, post secondary

education and training, diversity, total quality management, and

business/community partnerships. Providing customized curriculum development,

and creative implementation methods, for over 160,000 educators/employees in

thirty eight states.

1979-1996: Tennessee Valley Authority, Office of Economic and Community

Development, as an educational specialist and program administrator. Developed

and implemented customized training programs with state departments of

education and local school systems. Worked with local school systems and local

community colleges, in seven southeastern states to provide quality professional

development for teachers. Helped schools to develop and expand career and

technical education opportunities while developing curriculum that was

interdisciplinary in nature to include academics. Developed, implemented,

recruited, selected, and maintained apprenticeship programs with labor unions,

industrial boards, chambers of commerce, and local municipalities in seven

southeastern states. Apprenticeship areas included but were not limited to

operating engineers, iron workers, steamfitters, plumbers, electrical workers, and

asbestos workers. Managed budgets in excess of ten million dollars; wrote

contracts and grants; developed and implemented training programs K-16;

supervised up to twenty employees in a total of five training locations.

1975-1979: Family and Consumer Sciences Instructor and GED instructor.

1974: Summer intern; Henry County Agriculture Extension Service.
