SUMMARY

Balbinder S. Deo has worked in industry and academic institutions for many

years to search for the technical and managerial causes of low productivity in

assembly line production systems, ore production and processing systems,

vegetative oils processing systems and job shop type manufacturing systems.

Since July 2000, he is working as an assistant professor (Term position), in

the Department of Finance & Management Science, University of Saskatchewan.

He has offered Production & Operations Management courses to MBA, and 2nd

year commerce students. He had also offered Purchasing and Materials Management

course to 4th year commerce students in Fall 2000.

Over five and a half years he has used computer simulation and costing

techniques for detailed analysis of operations to search the causes of low

productivity in assembly line production systems, ore mining and ore processing

systems, and job shop type manufacturing systems. He has discovered basic

modeling principles to simulate assembly lines, manufacturing operations, ore

mining and processing operations and these principles are also applicable to

service operations. He has identified and studied the elements of cost involved

in operations for developing the Operation Based Costing System. The system has

been tested in Inco Ltd., Thompson, Manitoba and in New Holland Canada Ltd.

Winnipeg, Manitoba.

He has developed the basic methodology for evaluation of productivity and

productivity losses in manufacturing systems. He has identified the causes of

productivity loss and developed the measurement technique to measure the share

of productivity loss for each cause. He has tested the methodology in New

Holland Canada Ltd. Winnipeg, Manitoba. The methodology is useful in developing

cost information for basic manufacturing and assembly line production systems.

At the University of Manitoba, he has assisted in teaching simulation

techniques to model manufacturing systems. He also assisted in teaching

manufacturing cost analysis course to graduate and undergraduate engineering

students. He instructed manufacturing cost analysis course to industrial

engineering students for one session at the University of Manitoba. He also

delivered lectures on comparative advantages of simulation modeling languages,

such as Witness and Automode to graduate and under graduate engineering

students. He has conducted week long two training sessions on Computer

Simulations to mining engineers at INCO, Thompson, Canada.

Since October 1998, he has modeled many manufacturing assembly plans and

layouts for different tractor assembly lines at New Holland Canada Ltd.

Winnipeg, Manitoba. For each layout he showed production bottlenecks,

requirement of waiting spaces, capacity of waiting spaces and buffers, at

different production capacity levels. He displayed the conflicts related to

time, space, distance, and effects of defective parts entering the production

system. He also examined the production capacity of existing system and

compared it with the proposed assembly line plans to reduce the size of

investment for assembly line expansion.

(1982

-1986)

Main areas of research: study of inventories in Public and Private Sector

companies in India, Applications of Project Management Techniques for planning

agriculture production operations.

FUTURE RESEARCH DIRECTION

His future research work will be based on Simulation Modeling and Operation

Based Cost analysis techniques for measuring and improving productivity in

production, service and managerial operations by identifying the causes of poor

productivity under different production scenarios. The technique will also be

tested to evaluate the operational strategies of companies under different scenarios.

Supply Chain Operations are another research area that needs the development of

cost information structure for each node of the supply chain for better supply

chain operations and supply chain management decisions. The testing and use of

the costing technique in different areas will be helpful in refining and

developing the basic manufacturing cost fundamentals for accurately measuring

productivity for manufacturing and services industries. Development of the

structure of database for Operation Based Cost analysis technique is another

dimension of research that needs exploration. Application of Operation Based

Costing will also include the analysis of productivity, productivity loss, and

finding the causes of productivity loss in various North American manufacturing

& servicing companies. In addition to that the role of social and political

factors in manufacturing decision process is also needs to be examined.
