Faculty - Emergency Management, Homeland Security, and Criminal Justice
I was hired as a faculty member but into a unique position. The college had wanted to create a facility for cross-disciplinary teams to engage in disaster training so they requested funds from a local Representative to help them. Once the funds were received they hired out for someone knowledgeable in the areas of emergency management; that is where I come in. I worked with two grants, totaling approximately $500,000, and built a designed around the look and feel of an Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Within the first three months of being at the college I led the building and execution of a full-scale exercise involving over 13 different external agencies, multiple departments internal to the college, all of which totaling over 100 responders and 100 students and volunteers. During this time I also supervised the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Chair and provided assistance to him and his department, including 3 full time employees and over 30 adjuncts. Furthermore, I began teaching Criminal Justice courses shortly after arriving and have since developed an Emergency Management and Homeland Security degree and certificate program, in which I also teach.
SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Management Responsibly designed and oversaw construction of a state-of-the-art emergency operations center for approximately $500,000. Manage the facility allowing use for both training and managing MOU s for operational use.
Relationships Have created relationships that have broken regional walls and allowed agencies to work with each other to accomplish objectives for instance a Full-Scale exercise involving over 13 different agencies, 100 responders, and 100 victims.
Training Identified critical shortages of training within emergency management professionals and have begun to fill those gaps. Have designed, received approval for, and implemented a curriculum for students looking to aspire into the fields of emergency management and homeland security. Implemented community outreach programs to better prepare the public on taking care of themselves and each other for both short and long term disasters.
April 2007 - November 2009
Area Explosives Manager
Managed all aspects of business operations for a 6 state area (including hiring, training, federal licensing, P&L, marketing, etc.). Supervised staff of 10+ individuals task with the responsibility of transporting of explosives across state lines and the safe detonation thereof for multiple industrial purposes. Received first offer ever, in company history, of an employee with less than three years experience to open a new office. Maintained federal, state, and local licensures and ensured emergency management plans were in place and up-to-date.
SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Fiscal Affairs - Identified major flaws and concerns in financial responsibilities.
Employees Upon hire discovered a lack of morale and high turn-over and thus implemented clear training guidelines and programs, which motivated employees by showing them where they stood within the company and how they could move up. Turn-over was subsequently cut in half.
Time-Management Last minute travel was frequently demanded, the coordination of which I was solely responsible for. Extremely tight deadlines, upon which hundreds of thousands of dollars often rest, were common. Thriving under pressure, time-management skills were thoroughly tested, used, and, if an error was found, corrected.
February 2001 - April 2007United States Air ForceSenior Emergency Actions Controller
A fast paced, 24/7 job that required a sound decision making skills, the ability to thrive and adapt under constant and high pressure, and a familiarization with all aspects of emergency management. Acted as on-scene liaison to an airplane crash, a senior operations center controller during a further airplane crash and Category 4 hurricane, and responded to other all-hazards events throughout my career. Responsible for generating professional reports seen by high-level executives at all levels of the Air Force. Hand-Selected, ahead of rank, for competitive position within a National Nuclear Emergency Operations Center where I exercised continuity of operations on a governmental level.
SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Training Was able to adapt to job demands in a rapid manner, which allowed me to excel at multiple jobs and be promoted to lead trainer. Such actions allowed me to identify deficiencies and create programs that won Air Force wide attention.
Communication Verbal and Written communication was a critical part of the job. Verbal briefings were required to high-level executives on rapidly deteriorating situations, recommendations were provided, and exact and detailed written communication always followed. Having these skills allowed me to progress at the job and take major positions in training sections.
Responsibility On a daily basis I handled Top Secret material, or material considered to put the Nation in grave danger if ever released. I also participated in community programs and Air Force programs, such as the Honor Guard. I did this while starting a family and starting my education. I am also not afraid to step up when others can t and ensure that everything I do and that I request my subordinates to do is safe and responsible.
