West Coast Groundfish Observer Program

The West Coast Groundfish Observer program provides trained biologists to work aboard commercial fishing vessels and produce statistically valid, fishery-dependent data of the catch.

Duties:

Monitor for marine mammal interactions and other endangered speciesRecord fishing effort information (location, time, data, depth)Estimate total catch, retained, and discarded weightsSample for composition of species in the catch and document reasons for discardRecord weight, length, sex, and take dissections from tagged fishTake biological samples such as sex, length, otolith, and tissues
