Contractor for GISC/STRATCOM
VMWare Engineer / Architect
April 2009 - September 2009
Installed, configured, kernel tuning, and securing ESX 4 on Sun Blade x6440. These blades use a NEM blade (10GB) HXGE driver, which was not available for ESX 4. A driver for 3.5 had to be used and integrated with vSphere to allow connectivity to storage. Due to this issue, I was unable to utilize iSCSI as a storage solution. In place of iSCSI and lack of funding for HBA's, I was forced to use NFS Datastore.
128 Blades vSphere (700+ VM's)
128 Blades ESX 3.5 (700+ VM's)
V Center was installed on a Windows 2003 64 Bit (SR2) blade to manage the ESX 4 servers and VM's. Approximately 25 VM's were managed for a development and QA environment. I was unable to deploy the vSphere environment in a production or Internet facing environment due to the lack of a DOD STIG that is not available for vSphere. Tools that I have used include HA and DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler, High Availability), Update Manager (Patch Management), and vMotion (to move disks easily)
SRM to automate recovery to / from the AirForce Academy using NFS data store.
vSphere is rebranded version of VI 3.5, with more enhanced tools and the ability to run servers over the internet (hence the Cloud Computing reference).
