experience leading and managing a successful family-owned business and therefore enjoy
advising nonprofits on the best practices of how to run their nonprofit business. I
specialize in grant research helping identify additional potential funding resources. I
also created and maintained NonprofitExpert a free online resource for nonprofits that
contain over seven hundred pages of information with thousands of hyperlinks all checked
monthly for accuracy. The website was sold in 2012. I am no longer actively consulting
with nonprofits but focusing my time freelance writing and working on other projects.

Served as a director for the company as well as rotate serving on various committees that
include but are not limited to compensation committee, audit committee as well as long
range strategic planning committee. All family members rotate on and off the board as well
as committees periodically.
Pitt County Commissioner District 3 - 12/02 to 12/04/06
Elected to a four year term serving the citizens of Pitt County. One of nine
commissioners guided staff to manage a budget over $100,000,000. Planned for future
spending and expansion of services. Guided the transition of Pitt County Mental Health to
the state mandated private sector system. Did not seek to run for re-election.
Pepsi-Cola Company of Greenville - Vice President - 6/90 - 12/98
Managed operations and developed on-going systems and programs to enhance sales. Company
of 100 employees, with two site locations and a general and administrative budget of $1.7
million dollars. Responsible for programs in corporate giving, customer service,
regulatory compliance, human resources, training, safety/security, community relations,
banking relationships, corporate investments, and site renovations.
Pepsi-Cola Company of Greenville - Human Resources / Public Relations - 6/86 - 5/90
Developed the entire Human Resource function into an organized system. Established
written employment policy and procedures, compensation/benefits programs, and wrote the
first employee handbook. Managed corporate donations and became active in community
affairs. Prior summer experiences involved working in each aspect of the company.
North Carolina Statewide Boards and Commissions
North Carolina Legislative Disaster Response and Recovery Commission - 2000 to 2002
Presided as Senate Co-chairman of the commission s meetings and public hearings to study
the effects of Hurricane Floyd and to better prepare the state of North Carolina for
future disasters. In June 2001, the North Carolina General Assembly passed Senate Bill
300. This bill represents one of the most significant attempts by a state to take on a
greater role in disaster recovery and mitigation. It codifies policy recommendations made
by the 2000-2001 Legislative Study Commission on Disaster Response and Recovery, and
amends the enabling legislation for emergency management in the state. The Commission
recommended that the University of North Carolina and the North Carolina Community College
System study the need for, and feasibility of, creating an Institute of Disaster Studies
in North Carolina.
Governor s Crime Commission - 1995 to 2001
Appointed to this state board by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. Involved in the approval
process of the federal grants to state and local agencies and nonprofit agencies. Past
Vice-Chairman of the Committee for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
State Health Plan Purchasing Alliance -
1993 to 1995
Appointed to this state board by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. This board lead by
Lieutenant Governor Dennis A. Wicker sought to provide low cost health insurance options
for the uninsured and underinsured in North Carolina.

Foundation Experience
The Greater Greenville Foundation Advisory Board -Greenville, NC - 1/02 to present but
non-active
The Greater Greenville Foundation -Greenville, NC - 1/99 to 12/01Part-TimeExecutive Director. The Greenville Foundation began in 1978 and has been
volunteer managed until 1999. Current goals include implementing policies and procedures
at the direction of the board of directors to further develop the scope of the foundation
to encompass all of Pitt County. In late 1999 a granting cycle for nonprofits began and
focus placed on further management of trust accounts and charitable gifts.

Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation State Advisory Panel Member - 01/99 - 12/01
In 1978, the Board of Trustees of the Foundation created a State Advisory Panel, which it
views as a vital means of increasing the Foundation's awareness of funding opportunities
in the state. Panel members serve three-year terms, and more than 100 people from across
the state have now served on the Advisory Panel. Panel members are asked for their ideas
and suggestions in regard to the Foundation's mandate to make grants which benefit the
people of North Carolina. In addition, the Board has delegated to the Advisory Panel the
responsibility of selecting recipients for the Nancy Susan Reynolds Awards. The Panel has
no authority to make grants, nor does it share any powers or duties of the Board of
Trustees.
Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Issues Effecting Women Committee 02/02 to 11/02
The Foundation seeks to eliminate the unjust and unequal treatment of people of color,
immigrants and those who are economically disadvantaged; eradicate the physical and sexual
violence that threatens the lives and well-being of women; protect the rights of women to
make choices about their reproductive health; and provide adolescents with information and
choices that encourage them to avoid pregnancy.
