Based on a review of the literature and supplemented by anecdotal experiences as an

online instructor and instructional designer, presented best practices for online

instruction and corresponding design elements related to course structure, course

activities, effective use of instructional technologies, and effective and timely

communication with students.

Workshop (2008) Creating an Enhanced Podcast from a PowerPoint Presentation

Demonstrated how to combine PowerPoint slides and audio recordings in Garageband into an

enhanced podcast (narrated slideshow that allows for nonlinear playback). Examples of

student-produced podcasts from SUNY Cortland s iTunesU were also shown.

Workshop (2008)- Get a Second Life!

Co-Presented with Dr. Amanda Hollister

Participants created an avatar and became familiar with the basic functions of

communication and navigation in the Second Life virtual world. Afterwards, they were given

a tour of some of the educational sites in Second Life and discussed possible uses within

the classroom.

Workshop (2008) - Creating a READ Poster with Photoshop

Using Adobe Photoshop, participants created posters using graphics, photographs and type

modeled after the American Library Association series of posters for the promotion of

reading.

Paper Presentation (2008) - TechInfo: A Collaborative Technology Resource for the

Masses

Co-Presented with Dr. Amanda Hollister

Discussed how TechInfo has evolved from a simple website to a service-oriented portal and

how it serves as a collaborative knowledge database containing information on technology

resources, answers to frequently asked questions and related technology announcements.

Also discussed challenges faced such as recruiting contributors, maintaining information,

and dealing with a potential campus redesign.

Poster (2008) - Maintaining a Virtual Campus in Second Life

Demonstrate and discuss the successes and challenges of setting up and maintaining a

virtual campus presence.

Workshop (2007) - Create Podcasts from Your PC with Camtasia Studio 4

Familiarized participants with best practices of podcasting and podcast production

utilizing Camtasia Studio. Provided an opportunity to create podcasts and vodcasts.

Gave a basic overview of what elements are necessary to build a simple multimedia system

for the purpose of creating distance-learning modules utilizing SofTV Presenter and

Camtasia Studio. Information on necessary equipment, including but not limited to digital

video cameras, microphones, video switchers, lighting, and software, specifically Camtasia

Studio and SofTV

Workshop (2004) - What You Need to Know BEFORE You Build A Website

Topics included website content, design and layout, copyright law and fair use, and how

to avoid the most common mistakes in web design. Briefly discussed Macromedia Dreamweaver

Covered the fundamental skills for creating professional graphics that compliment and

emphasize the content of a website. Introduced basic tools in Photoshop.

Discussed the development of tutorials for popular productivity applications by interns

for an Electronic Tutorial Library. Tutorials were created using Camtasia Studio and broke

down the basics of each program into manageable and easy to follow lessons.
