EXPERIENCE

2008 - Present

U.S. ARMY

(Mobilized as an Army Reserve officer)

Domestic and European Locations

Brigade Commander

Led all aspects of a Brigade Headquarters and three subordinate battalions comprised of a diverse group of full-time and part-time soldiers across the Midwest region. Responsible for designing, organizing, and providing specialized pre-deployment training to units at battalion and brigade level across the country. Personally accountable for the performance and deployment readiness of each soldier in the Brigade, as well as all equipment, training, and Brigade performance as whole.

Fostered atmosphere of excellence and innovation that enabled the Brigade to deliver superior training to units despite reductions in manpower and budget.

Instituted new training methods that increased the preparedness of Brigade soldiers to go to war, while not impinging on quality of training delivered.

Built a culture based on shared values that bonded teams, increased sense of purpose, and reduced administrative issues.

Executive Officer and Strategist

Led a team of 10 senior officers and all support staff for two two-star generals who advise the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff on all matters pertaining to the Reserve and Guard forces nationwide. Advised the generals on the global impacts of their positions and coordinated issues with their counterparts at the highest levels of the Joint Staff in the Pentagon. Integrated Department of Defense and national-level strategy and vision into top-level military plans.

Forged relationships with six key directorates, breaking communication barriers and generating greater office participation in three- and four-star level meetings.

Nov 2005-Oct 2006

Battalion Commander

Led a battalion of 150 soldiers providing finance support to 20,000 Army soldiers and Marines serving in Kuwait, Qatar, and western Iraq. With over $400 million on hand at any given time and paying over $1 billion in U.S. Government contracts during my tenure, commanding this battalion was comparable to running a regional bank. Recognized as the best of the five battalions serving on our year-long rotation.

Modernized archaic reporting processes for outlying offices, achieving perfect fund accountability in a region where previous battalions had failed to do so. Completed our tour with no fund losses an extremely rare accomplishment for a Finance battalion at that time in Iraq.

Applied Lean Six Sigma concepts to eliminate duplicate procedures and automate manual processes, improving transaction accuracy to greater than 99.95%.

Increased staff efficiency in the most vital areas by 300% by restructuring decision authorities and removing old, outdated practices.

1993-2007

NEW MARKET BANK

Lakeville, Minnesota

Chief Financial Officer

Recruited personally by the owner/CEO in 1993 to form a new Financial Services division within the bank when its total assets were approximately $18 million. After quickly growing the division to a successful level and bringing in three additional sales representatives, I transferred to bank management when the bank s total assets were approximately $30 million. Eight years later, the bank had grown to over $80 million, all while maintaining by far the strongest net interest margin (4.5% - 5.0%) of any bank in our market area. Just as significantly, the bank sustained its market share while the number of banks in our market area tripled an achievement made possible by the bank-wide strategic planning efforts I led that identified new market areas, spawned new product development, and positioned us in the market to achieve growth. Interfaced daily with the chief lending officer and the active, energetic loan department to insure tight integration of strategic vision and objectives in their short- and long-term goals. Fostered key external relationships to expand business opportunities, while conducting an extensive program to instill a culture of service excellence across all functional departments. Eliminated nonessential costs and increased fee income to improve the efficiency ratio from over 65% in 1999 to just over 50% by the end of 2006. Developed an asset/liability pricing model that we relied on to maintain our strong net interest margin, while providing key insight into the risk of our asset and liability pricing decisions.

2004-2007 CFO

Responsible for all bank operations and profitability. Primary executive overseeing risk management and analysis, bank-wide strategic planning, human resources, administration, marketing, cash flow, and treasury functions. Key participant in decisions involving credit and loan portfolio composition. Supervised all personnel outside of lending; set bank-wide policies and organization structure.

Led a cross-functional team of dynamic leaders from all bank departments through annual strategic planning efforts, successfully focusing marketing programs on differentiation and branding strategies that maintained market share during a period in which the number of direct competitors tripled.

Obtained and managed over $25 million in available new liquidity sources, without which our growth would not have been possible.

Developed computer-based tools to manage the risk that inherently comes with rapid growth. Our risk analysis consistently received outstanding reviews during regulatory exams.

2000-2004 Cashier

Asked by the CEO to move from Financial Service Officer to Cashier. Responsible for bank operations, financial reporting, and cash management. Supervised accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, administration, human resources, and payroll functions performed by 15 employees.

Aligned reporting systems to internal (i.e., management) and external (i.e., FDIC Call Report, etc.) requirements, improving affected staff s efficiency by 25%.

Introduced an automated and integrated performance evaluation and pay system, saving 100 hours (25%) of staff time at year-end while improving accuracy and vital communication with employees.

1993-1999 Financial Services Officer

Grew the department to more than $20 million under management as the sole representative. Generated significant fee income from estate, tax, and comprehensive financial planning consulting services.

1987-1992

PRICE WATERHOUSE

Minneapolis, Minnesota and Indianapolis, Indiana

Senior Accountant

Internationally-known public accounting and management consulting firm. Subsequently merged with Coopers & Lybrand to become what is today PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Provided accounting, auditing, and business consulting services to clients in a variety of industries including government, manufacturing, service, and nonprofit entities.

Experience with clients in automotive parts manufacturing, beverage can manufacturing, artificial joint manufacturing, truck wheel manufacturing, cleaning chemical production, employee leasing services, automotive supply distribution, oil pipeline transportation services, dairy processing and distribution, asbestos abatement contracting, robot technology applications, and others.
