Service Responsibilities:

Holds clinics, two full days per week, at the Cornea Service of the Wilmer Eye Institute.

One day per week is devoted to the Ocular Surface Diseases and Dry Eye Clinic where

patients with allergic and immunologic diseases of the ocular surface (scleritis,

keratitis,

cicatrizing conjunctivitis, dry eye and ocular surface diseases associated with

autoimmune and collagen vascular disorders) are managed. Dr. Akpek is the Director of

the Ocular Surface Clinic. The other day id devoted to surgical patients. Dr. Akpek

performs various surgeries, one day per week, to reconstruct the ocular surface in

patients

with destructive anterior segment problems including lamellar and penetrating

keratoplasty, amniotic membrane and scleral grafting, limbal stem cell transplantation

and artificial cornea surgery. Dr. Akpek is the only faculty member who performs

artificial corneal surgeries. Dr. Akpek receives numerous patient referrals from within

as

well as outside the United States who need these surgeries.

Dr. Akpek spends two days per week doing laboratory and clinical research as well as

teaching.

Dr. Akpek also participates in the Sjogren s Syndrome Center at the Bayview Medical

Center and holds clinics one day per month. Dr. Akpek is the Associate Director of the

Center.
