Work Experience
David Landau and Associates, LLC, Managing Director, 20052008
Fairfield, New Jersey
Sold, managed and performed Sarbanes-Oxley engagements in the pharmaceutical/health care,
high tech (software and consulting), manufacturing, and real estate sectors. For each
client I had responsibility as the engagement director for project planning, project
deliverable quality, coordination with external auditors and the Audit Committee, and all
matters related to project budget, schedule and staffing. I managed over $2 million in
consulting fees. Clients included: Arbor Realty, Aircastle Advisors, Quadra Realty, Allion
Healthcare, National Medical Healthcard (now SXC), Kimco Realty, and Fortress Investment
Advisors. I also assisted DLA management with overall staff scheduling, marketing, and
setting of deliverable standards.
For a $9 billion property management REIT, had overall responsibility for all Sarbanes-
Oxley deliverables, including project charter, process and IT documentation, testing, and
evaluation of deficiencies. I managed a team that included up to 8 consultants and over 25
client process owners. At the end of the engagement the client satisfied all external
auditor requirements and had no significant deficiencies.
For a $2 billion mortgage REIT, had overall responsibility for the documentation,
testing, remediation, external auditor support and attestation phases of the project. I
worked closely with senior management of the REIT to manage and coordinate the effort, and
ensured that all remediation tasks were completed satisfactorily.
R. Battino & Associates, Managing Director, 2001Present
Jericho, New York
Sold and performed business and technology planning services to financial service firms
and other enterprises. Clients included: Prudential, JP Morgan Chase, H&R Block Financial
Advisors, Morgan Stanley, U.S. Government, Anthem BCBS, MIM Corporation, AECOM
For one of the largest Retirement Services providers in the United States managed the
Program Office of a $40 million project through a mid-project transformation and project
rescue. During this assignment, I revised the governance of the program, resolve internal
audit issues, updated the project Risk Management Plan, worked with in-house and
consulting firm Project Managers to upgrade project tracking and reporting, and expedited
testing and a major production release of Pega-based application code. As part of my
responsibilities I also reported progress regularly to the Executive Steering Committee,
Corporate CIO and Project Sponsors. Work Experience (continued) Working with Control
Solutions International, I sold, managed and prepared deliverables for ten Sarbanes-Oxley
documentation and testing engagements. Our clients included companies engaged in
pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution, software development, advertising, and
manufacturing. During the course of those engagements I worked closely with senior level
management personnel, Audit Committee members and external auditors (including all of the
Final Four ) to craft and manage preparation of deliverables that satisfied PCAOB s
documentation and testing requirements.
For one of the largest domestic providers of health insurance benefits, I conducted an
audit of one of the company s regional claims processing operations, and planned and
audited a regional enrollment and billing operations. During the claims audit, our test
procedures uncovered a significant number of claims that had failed to be adjudicated on a
timely basis, and initiated efforts to resolve the claims before the company incurred
substantial penalties. From the audit of enrollment and billing operations, we uncovered
considerable opportunities for process improvements that went beyond the payback
documented in prior Six Sigma studies.
For one of the world s largest consumer and investment banking firms, I created and
managed a program office to facilitate the pilot implementation of third-party vendor IT
Portfolio Management, Resource Management and Program/Project Management software,
concurrently across multiple lines of business. In addition, I led the project team,
comprised of over 25 IT professionals, during numerous project scope-setting and product
configuration workshops designed to finalize requirements and develop LOB-specific
migration strategies.
For a division of the Department of Commerce, I worked with The Coronado Group to develop
workflow and document repository requirements for economic surveys processed for Commerce
and other Federal Government agencies. The system design included specifications for
optical scanning of survey documents, validation of scanned surveys and exception handling
for surveys failing validation, indexing and filing of valid surveys, and analysis and
reporting of survey data. For a small long-term care insurer, I performed an in-flight
project assessment of vendor proposals for replacement of the company's policy
administration and claim payment systems.
For a large multi-faceted personal financial services company, I prepared an
implementation plan and business case for senior management for replacement of their in-
house brokerage back-office systems with Beta Systems' BETAHost on a service bureau basis.
The project included the integration of the BETA Systems' account setup and brokerage
transaction processing software into the company's existing brokerage and tax services web
portals.
KPMG Consulting Inc., Senior Manager, Financial Services, 19972001
New York, NY
Sold and managed large process redesign, risk management and IT program management
projects for companies in the financial services and media industries. Also led KPMG
efforts to define, acquire and implement practice management and workforce management
software for both internal and client use. Clients included: New York Life, MetLife, Amica
Insurance, Merrill Lynch, FleetBoston, First Union National Bank, Cablevision.
Work Experience
(continued) For a top-ten insurance company, I managed a team of thirty KPMG and client
personnel engaged in planning the redevelopment of policy administrative and customer
support systems, and re-engineering of related business processes. The team, which
included the active participation of both client business and information systems
personnel, addressed the business unit s need for new systems to support its expanding
group, individual and AARP business. The solution allowed the company to process four
times as many transactions with the same workforce.
For the leasing subsidiary of a top ten national Bank, I led the implementation of new
project management standards and workforce management solution that tracked the division's
IT project portfolio and maintenance backlog and facilitated optimal allocation of IT
resources. As a result of the implementation, IT executives were able to boost internal IT
productivity, improve project oversight, and reduce the backlog of outstanding projects.
For a New England provider of personal insurance lines, I managed a KPMG and client IT
team engaged in the architecture and development of data warehouse and data marts.
Information presented through the data marts gave the company s senior marketing personnel
insights into the effectiveness of both their sales force and customer service operation.
For the International Division of a top ten life and annuity provider, I identified and
prototyped software that could be used as the core administrative system for the
division s 22 overseas locations. With a team of 12 client, vendor and KPMG personnel, we
defined the core business requirements for overseas operation, and developed mechanisms to
allow easy implementation of variations that addressed local market and regulatory
requirements. Using our solution, the company has been able to efficiently expand its
international operations, and has now adopted the software for domestic policy
administration as well.
For one of the largest brokerage and investment houses in the world, I led a team of
project management experts who conducted in-flight project reviews. Our reviews, which
were performed primarily for domestic and international trading desks and operations,
pinpointed problems in project management and test preparation that could have caused the
company to miss crucial Euroclear and Street-wide testing milestones. For a Wall Street
securities firm involved in securities trading and clearinghouse activities on behalf of
correspondent brokers around the world, I led the preparation of a business impact
assessment, determined recovery strategy for each major system and managed development of
disaster recovery plans. The plan needed to satisfy New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ,
Chicago Board of Options Exchange and federal regulators' concerns in the Firm s initial
disaster recovery plan. The revised plan satisfied the regulators completely.
For the sub-prime lending subsidiary of a major money center bank, I managed and provided
disaster recovery expertise to a team of thirty client and KPMG Consulting personnel who
prepared recovery and test plans for major applications and infrastructure components in
the client's seven California data centers. We also tested all plans to ensure that they
were accurate and workable.
For a $2 billion entertainment company, I managed a program office and led a team of
forty client and KPMG personnel engaged in the planning, remediation and Y2K certification
of software, hardware and production equipment. During this engagement I made frequent
presentations to board members regarding program status and identified for them
opportunities for using the Y2K project as a vehicle for both process and system
improvement.
Work Experience
(continued) Contingency Planning Research,
Sr. Project Mgr., 19951997, White Plains,
NY
Sold, managed and performed business continuity and disaster recovery projects for
Fortune 100 companies engaged in loan application processing and servicing, brokerage and
securities movement, video production and distribution, beverage distribution, rental car
reservations, wireless services and telemarketing (call center). I prepared business
impact analyses, risk assessments, risk mitigation strategies and business continuity and
disaster recovery for: Walt Disney Inc., Pepsico, AT&T Wireless, Cendant (Wizcom and Avis
divisions), NatWest Markets, and Harris Publishing. In addition, for a major international
bank s United States subsidiary, I developed and implemented an IT outsourcing plan.
Working with the bank's executives, I determined required capacity, developed an RFP for
outsourcers, evaluated and negotiated with potential vendors, and planned implementation.
Our negotiating efforts reduced the cost of IT services by 55% from prior year costs.
