II. Teaching Information

Primary Course Responsibilities:

1. HS 710 Applied Clinical Pharmacology (3hr): 1998 present. This is a graduate level

requirement for the Master of PA degree and Doctor of Nurse Practitioner degrees. This

course discusses clinical applications of selected drug classes commonly prescribed in

the

outpatient, primary care setting as well as the follow-up management of common chronic

diseases. The course emphasizes the practical application of this knowledge in various

patient populations of all ages as well as rational drug selection and monitoring

necessary to

safely and effectively prescribe medications.

2. HS 711 Pharmacological Management of Acute and Chronic Diseases (3hr): 1999

present. This is a graduate level pharmacology requirement for the Master of PA degree,

Master of Science Nursing (Clinical Nurse Specialist and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

degrees), and the Doctor of Nurse Practitioner degrees. This course discusses clinical

applications of selected drug classes commonly prescribed in the emergency care setting

as

well as the follow-up management of selected chronic diseases. The course emphasizes the

practical application of this knowledge in various patient populations of all ages as

well as

rational drug selection and monitoring necessary to safely and effectively prescribe

medication.

3. HS 301 Clinical Pharmacology ON-LINE (3hr): 2003 2007, 2010 2011. This course is

an alternative to the face-to-face course for students with schedule conflicts or who

live

outside the Wichita area.

4. HS 301 Clinical Pharmacology (3hr): 1998 2008; 2010. This is a multidisciplinary

pharmacology course required for pre-dental hygiene, pre-nursing, public health science

degree, and athletic training and serves as an elective for other health professions

students.

This course discusses most major classes of drugs as to pharmacokinetics, mechanisms of

action, side effects, drug interactions, contraindications, therapeutic use, appropriate

drug

monitoring, and the clinical application of this knowledge.

5. PA 726 Physician Assistant Research Methods (3hr): 2009 present. This is a graduate

level, cross-listed multidisciplinary, research methods and evidence-based practice

requirement for PA, Nursing, Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Aging Studies.

This course focuses on evidence-based practice and discusses concepts of research

methodology (qualitative and quantitative), statistics, finding and interpreting medical

literature using evidence-based techniques, and ethical concerns of research. I also

coordinate the Directed Study component of the PA curriculum including final projects and

poster presentations, setting due dates and creating grading criteria, formatting

instructions,

and student resources.

6. PA 896, PA 897, PA 898 Directed Study Research I, II, & III (2hr each): 2005present. Series

of three courses in which Master of PA students work with an assigned faculty advisor to

complete a

research project or evidence-based practice paper suitable for dissemination in a

refereed forum.

7. NURS 795 Applied Drug Therapy (3hr): 2008 2010. This is a graduate level requirement

for the Master of Science in Nursing (Family Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse

Practitioner,

Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and Nurse Midwifery). This course discusses

clinical applications of selected drug classes commonly prescribed in the outpatient,

8. PT 755 Clinical Pharmacology for Physical Therapy (2hr): 2005 present. This is a

graduate

level requirement for the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. This course discusses most

major

classes of drugs as to pharmacokinetics, mechanisms of action, side effects, drug

interactions,

contraindications, and therapeutic uses. Clinical application of knowledge emphasizes the

physical

therapist s role in assessment, management, and proper referral of patients experiencing

sub -

therapeutic benefits or drug related problems.

9. PA 128 Pharmacology of Street Drugs (1hr): 2004 2009. This was a multidisciplinary

course required for the Substance Abuse Counselor associate degree program. This course

attracted a variety of CHP and non-CHP students, including psychology, social work,

criminal

justice, chemistry, and education. This course discussed major classes of drugs of abuse

including alcohol, depressants, narcotics, stimulants, hallucinogens, marijuana, and

others as

well as medications commonly used to treat mental illness. The course was discontinued

upon

discontinuation of the degree/certificate.
