Research Interests
Machine translation, computational syntax (parsing, tagging) and semantics (semantic role
labelling), machine learning for NLP. My dissertation focuses on using syntax to improve
statistical
machine translation for language pairs with syntactically governed word-order
differences. Specifically, I
use the flexible, word-centered syntax known as Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) to
implement
syntax-guided reordering models in phrase-based MT.
Education
PhD Computational Linguistics, The Ohio State University, 2012. (M.A., 2011)*(Advisers:
Chris Brew.)liam Schuler
M.A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, 2004,magna cum
laude.
(Adviser: Marie-Francine Moens.)

B.A. French & Analytic Philosophy, Indiana University (Bloomington), 1999.
Employment
The Ohio State University (Columbus, OH)l Summer 2010, Summer 2011-present. Research
Associate for Dr. Michael White, developing taggersand extending the text realization
capabilities of the OpenCCG
Presently focusing on using OpenCCG for paraphrasing in order to improve MT evaluation.
Winter, Spring 2010; Winter 2011. Graduate Teaching Associate,Language and Computers
(LING

language tech-
nologies.
Autumn 2010.
Graduate Teaching Associate,Codes and Code-breaking (LING 484). Instructor
for a quarter-long course focusing on the history and basic principles of classic
cryptology.
Summer 2005 and Summer 2008{Autumn 2009. Graduate Research Associate for Dr. Chris Brew.
Developed computational syntactic and semantic technologies (taggers, semantic role
labellers, etc.) in
service of Dr. Brew's NSF CAREER grant.
Winter 2008. Graduate Research Associate for Dr. Simon Dennis. Developed and tested
prototypes of
a discriminative, connectionist language model as a model of human sentence processing.
