Administrative Experience and Responsibilities

Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Kent State University2003-present2010-2012: Department Administrator, Computer Science

Act in the capacity of chair for the everyday operation of the department until a

candidate

for chair could be identified.

Oversaw 17 tenured or tenure track faculty, 3 secretarial staff, and 3 technical

systems

staff.

Held direct responsibility for a $4.2 million annual operating budget.

Implemented measures to enhance revenue and reduce expenditures in order to reduce a

significant budget deficit.

Provided guidance for identifying opportunities and setting goals for the department.

Accomplishments: I assumed the role of Department Administrator November 15, 2010 and

immediately began working with the Faculty Advisory Committee to identify opportunities

and

propose goals for the department. On December 1, 2010 the entire faculty discussed the

issues

and adopted goals to enhance undergraduate education, expand funding for graduate

student,

address the budget deficit, and increase extramural research funding. To date, the

Department s

proposal to implement a new BA degree in Computer Science and to redesign the BS degree

core

requirement and organize upper division electives into concentrations has been accepted

by the

College and University. We also have collaborated with the ACM Student Association on a

retention initiative to implement a student mentoring program that pairs freshmen with a

junior

or senior Computer Science major to help the freshmen integrate into major. We worked

with

the College Development Officers to implement a two pronged development initiative to

reduce

financial burden and enhance access for CS undergraduates and supplement funding for

graduate

students that has resulted in $22,500 in grifts. We also have established a relationship

with a

local computing firm to provide several graduate assistantships. We have increased

section sizes

and decreased the number of undersubscribed sections offered. We also have established a

course rotation for upper division undergraduate and graduate courses that will allow us

to offer

a reduced number of courses per semester and thus direct students into under subscribed

cour ses.

The resulting workload shift has allowed faculty time to submit more proposals (there has

been a

50% increase over last year in the first half of this FY) for extramural funding and

reduce costs

by loaning some faculty time (0.4 FTE this year) and expertise to other University units

that are

short staffed such as a new academic unit, Digital Science. The department also loaned a

staff

member to help with secretarial needs in another academic unit that lost their secretary

during a

recent hiring freeze. In aggregate, we were able to reduce the budget deficit by 10%.

1

2008-present: Responsibility Center Management Budget Team

Conduct budgetary analysis of College and Departmental revenues and expenditures.

Help build College and Departmental budgets.

Work with Institutional Research and University Finance to analyze resource allocation.

Work with departments to develop and implement strategies to balance revenues and

expenditures.

Hold direct responsibility for a $9.5 million annual graduate budget.

Advise the Dean on various aspects pertaining to budget priorities.

Accomplishments: Working with the Dean, another associate dean, and the department

chairs,

we implemented policies and procedure, built databases, analyzed revenues and costs, and

guided the College through the transition from a historical based budgeting model to

Responsibility Center Management, in which each college is responsible for managing

revenue

and covering its costs and its share of the overhead needed to run other areas of the

University.

Working as a team, we have reduced the budget deficits in several departments and

increased the

surplus revenues in others so that the College entered the current fiscal year in the

black despite

budget cuts in State subsidy.

2005-present: Faculty Affairs

Conduct the annual reappointment review and oversee faculty professional development

of AAUP-represented tenure track probationary faculty.

Oversee the tenure and promotion process for the AAUP-represented tenure track and

tenured faculty and provide consultation to the Dean on matters of tenure and promotion.

Provide consultation to the Dean on the review and reappointment of AAUP-represented

non-tenure track faculty.

Serve as a University Administration Representative on the Joint Appeals Board.

Manage periodic reappointment review of departmental chairpersons and provide

consultation to the Dean on reappointment or non-reappointment of chairpersons.

Manage chairperson search procedures and provide consultation to the Dean on selection

of new chairpersons.

Serve in the Dean s Cabinet which advises the Dean on various aspects pertaining to the

administration of the College of Arts and Sciences, including faculty and chairperson

hires, budget priorities, development efforts, and student and faculty recognition

awards.

Represent the College of Arts and Sciences in all matters in the absence of the Dean.

Serve as the Kent State University Diversity Director for the NSF-IDEAS-AGEP

planning project to help URM and women enter the professoriate.

Accomplishments: I worked with the College level advisory body on reappointment, tenure,

and

promotion, to institute changes in the reappointment review process to provide formative

assessment and promote professional development of tenure track probationary faculty. The

Dean, another Associate Dean, and I have developed a reappointment, tenure, and promotion

workshop to help faculty prepare their case. We offer the workshop twice a year.

Additionally, I

led the Arts and Science Graduate Council to develop a policy for the College designed to

help

junior faculty develop the skills necessary for mentoring doctoral students in their

scholarly and

professional development.

2

2003-present: Graduate Affairs

Provide over all leadership for graduate studies in the College of Arts and Science, a

responsibility which includes development of new graduate programs, assessment of

current programs, assessment and (re)appointment of graduate faculty, and the

management of a $9.1 million annual graduate budget.

Oversee doctoral programs, which graduate 75

to 80 Ph. D. s a year, in 14 disciplines

and

master s degree programs, which graduate approximately 200 students a year, in 20

disciplines and interdisciplinary areas including degrees in Master of Arts, Master of

Liberal Studies, Master of Public Administration (an online program), Master of Science

and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.

Manage all aspects of graduate programming, from admissions to graduation, for over

1200 graduate students.

Represent the College of Arts and Sciences for the University s periodic review of

graduate programs, which entails reviewing a departmental self-study and reports from

internal and external review panels and formulating an action plan for each program

reviewed.

Represent the College of Arts and Sciences on the University Graduate Studies Academic

Advisory Council, which advises the University Dean of Graduate Studies on all matters

pertaining to graduate studies.

Represent the University on the Ohio Board of Regents, Regents Advisory Council on

Graduate Studies as an alternate for the University Dean of Graduate Studies.

Represent the College of Arts and Sciences on the University Educational Policy

Committee that advises the Provost on all Academic matters.

Accomplishments: The A&S Graduate Council and I developed a short and long term leave

policy for A&S graduate assistants that is currently being considered for adoption at the

University level for all graduate assistants. I collaborated with the Department of

Modern and

Classical Language Studies and the Dean of Graduate Studies to obtain final State

approval and

implementation of a new doctoral program in Translation Studies and secured additional

finding

to support graduate assistants for the new program. I worked with departments to shorten

the

time to degree and the number of doctoral degrees granted per year has increased by 50%.

I also

have overseen the enhancement of the criteria for graduate faculty status and for

admissions to

our graduate programs.

Assistant Chair, Biological Sciences2001-2003

Develop, staff, and implement the schedule of courses and teaching laboratories for the

Department of Biological Sciences.

Recruit and hire part-time teaching faculty.

Advise the Chairperson on facilities and space utilization and planning.
