1. Seaman Brokerage Systems-Margin System (Online
Margin Information Application)
Client : Banc of America Securities LLC., San Francisco
Role : Implementation of an online-Brokerage System
developed by Seaman Brokerage Systems of New York. Created
data mining processes in Perl to fetch data from ADP's BPSA
database and from Sungard Phase III download files. These
files served as input sources for the entire Margin
application. Also created Perl-CGI based HTML interface
screens for Margin System, which queries on Seaman's own
Sybase database to recover critical and historical data
from the application.
Portfolio : Database Programmer/IT
applications Consultant
Job Profile : Implementation of Seaman Borkerage
System involving Data mining application development in
Perl using Sybase db libraries, SQL and C.
Environment: Perl 5.0, Sybase db library, Transact-
SQL, kshell
2. Global Clearing Reporting system Project
Client:
Banc of America Securities LLC., San Francisco
Role: Creating general ledger reports in Perl 5.0 and
Sybase Transact-SQL. These were a series of reports that
were used by the global clearing departments to understand
the flow of foreign currency transactions (for stocks on
any particular trading day). Some of these query on
historical data by account, branch or firm. A few others
extract transactions by currency and so on and so forth.
Environment: Perl 5.0, Sybase db library, Transact-
SQL, kshell
3. Fidelity Brokerage System Project
Client : Fidelity Investments, Boston
Role: As a software engineer, created HTML-JavaScript front-
end interface for Server Side applications running in Perl.
These front-ends were integrated into a web-application for
Brokers who were dependent on reliable information about
their clients and account positions.
Environment: Java Script, DHTML.
August 19984. As a Team Leader, created a Web-based Service
Reminder Application. This application periodically
generates reminders for the company's sales
representatives, to help them follow-up with clients for
premiums, new prospects, etc. The application allows reps
to access events to occur in the next two months and take
action. Was responsible for writing Perl code for system
design and development.
Environment: Perl 5.0, Java Script, HTML.
July 19985. As a Team Leader, created a Web-based
Representative Assignment Application. This application is
used for assigning an area/district and sending a list of
residents from the telephone database of each area to the e-
mail in-box of the company's sales representatives. This
application allows marketing personnel to assign
geographical areas, eliminating paperwork and lengthy
meetings and bids for areas. Was responsible for writing
Perl code for system design and development. The system
generates an entry screen for the assignments and the e-
mail generation program.
Environment: Perl 5.0, Java Script, HTML.
April 1998 - June 1998
6. As a Team Leader, created a Web-based Travel
Insureline Activation Application. This application issues
travel insurance policies, activates travel insurance, and
registers travel insurance particulars for existing and
future customers. The project involved rewriting 150,000
lines of legacy Cobol code of the company's existing
application into Perl code. This required setting up
secure logins using NRIC numbers for existing policyholders
and allowing the registration and activation of travel
policies through the Web. Was responsible for writing Perl
code for system design and development. The project
eliminated the need of an intermediate NT/Unix server for
housing CGI scripts, since it uses an HP-3000 Web server to
host the Perl scripts. The data is stored on the same
machine, so processing time is reduced considerably,
facilitating superior performance of the application. Also
coded the part that writes to the database and the module
which allows the application to change between various data
sources.
Environment: Perl 5.0, Java Script.
March 19987. As a Team Leader, created a Web-based Policyholder
Inquiry System. This application is used for reporting on
insurance policies based on complex HTML form-based queries
on a policyholder database. It also allows policyholders
to change their pin numbers and passwords to secure their
policy details. The system allows multi-tier queries to be
created to provide input to text entry boxes in a form.
Processing is handled through Perl 5.0 and Java Script.
The application resides on the company web site and is
accessible through the Internet (WWW) by any/all
policyholders who want details and status of policies. Was
responsible for writing Perl code for system design.
Developed all HTML query input screens and 8 of 10
processing scripts.
Environment: Perl 5.0, Java Script, HTML.
January 1998 - February 1998
8. As a Project Leader, worked on an HP-3000 Inquiry
Project. The project involved migrating 21,000 lines of
legacy Cobol code to Perl code, capable of generating HTML
output screens. It allows the company's employees,
clients, associates, and management to access its legacy
data repositories (with restricted and varying levels of
access) housed on HP-3000 systems from anywhere in the
world after a secure login to the company's Intranet. The
project required setting up connectivity to KSAM files on
the HP-3000 through the Web and designing and developing a
Web-based application housed on the local Intranet (IIS 3.0
and NT 4.0) to query these legacy KSAM data files on an HP-
3000 using Minisoft-SQL. The results are displayed in the
form of HTML Web pages on the client browser that initiated
the process. Processing is through Perl Build 5.0, Java
Script, and VB Script. The Web server is Windows NT. A
mirror system performs the same function by querying the
data stored on the Allbase RDBMS using Allbase SQL-3000
queries.
Environment: Perl 5.0, Java Script, VB Script,
WINDOWS NT, ALLBASE RDBMS.
November 1997 - December 1997
10. As a Project Leader, was involved in the
development of a Policyholder Listing System. This system
provides management with a complete information base of
company representatives. It eventually developed into a
comprehensive information system for the reps themselves.
It allows them to have first-hand information on the
policies they closed with their clients through a secure
login to the corporate Intranet. It also provides them
with the option of associating the client's contact numbers
and e-mail addresses to their profile and even allows them
to automatically generate e-mail reminders and letters for
their clients, if needed, to keep the client updated on the
status of their policy, remind them that their payments are
due, and inform them of the company's new plans and
programs.
Another module accepts representative information
in an HTML form and builds a home page for them on-the-
fly. They have unique URLs. They can then send this
information to their own business associates and print the
URL on their stationary to reach a wider audience. The
project involved designing and developing a Web-based
application housed on the local Intranet (IIS 3.0 on NT
4.0) that queries legacy KSAM data files on the HP-3000
using SQL). The results are displayed in the form of HTML
Web pages on the client browser that initiated the
process. The processing involves Perl 5.0 and Java
Script. The Web Server is Windows NT. A mirror system
performs the same function by querying data stored on the
Allbase RDBMS using Allbase SQL-3000 queries. All
together, it allows Web queries for more than 50 modules
providing information on all company insurance policies.
Environment: Perl 5.0, Java Script, Windows NT and
ALLBASE RDBMS.
October 1997 - November 1997
11. As a Project Leader, designed and developed a
database application for the company's marketing department
and deployed it on the corporate Intranet. The application
queries the back-end on the basis of telephone number
and/or name of a particular individual and returns all
desired results in the form of an HTML table. The
application has three layers of security control and allows
secure login for company associates from any geographical
location. The project involved designing and building the
entire application, developing the query screen, coding the
secure login, and coding the actual analysis and
distribution of the query in the script's internal engine.
All processing was done via Perl 5.0 running on IIS 3.0 on
Windows NT, while the search was done by an embedded SQL
Connect statement. The database was Allbase, an HP-3000
native RDBMS. Other modules were added later to this
application, including one that dynamically validates and
adds more records to the database. Another module searches
by postal code. That is, it sorts all phone numbers for a
particular postal district and asks for a partial phone
number or names to be entered, reducing query time and
accelerating response time. Amended the programs to
alternately access the data from an MS-SQL server instead
of HP-3000.
Environment: Perl 5.0, IIS 3.0, WINDOWS NT,
ALLBASE.
October 199712. As a Content Developer, was involved in Web Site
Development. Was responsible for accepting site building
orders from the marketing team and delivering them to
clients. The project involved creation and regular
updating of Web advertisement-related Web sites for
Citibank. Citibank maintains a high profile Web presence
on the Asian Web scene. Was responsible for developing
sites that most accurately represent the ideals of
Citibank. Coordinated staff to create an analytical
understanding of the public's needs based on the feedback
and responses to changes made to the Web site.
February 1996 - September 1997
13. As a Senior Web Site Developer, was involved in Web
site design, development, and maintenance. Designed and
developed a Web site for Calcutta On-Line. This gigabyte
category Web site meets the needs of thousands of overseas
Indians, especially in North America and Europe. It was
the first advertisement-driven news site from Calcutta,
earning foreign exchange from selling news, webzines, Web
pages/sites, animation, and graphics. Was responsible for
HTML programming, Java Script programming, Java Applet
development and implementation, and CGI programming. Was
also responsible for complete content development and home
page design. Also performed digital artwork and animation
design for various home pages. Was involved in button
design, panel design, and banner design for home pages.

address the elite community on the Net and relaunch his
favorite portfolios. The site includes extensive CGI in
the guestbook section, as well as animation.
- Shatorupa (Japan): An advert-driven
webzine published in Japan, Shatorupa sources our original
HTML material before publishing on a free site. Special
sections are subscriber-driven. Perl programming for
password checking option was performed by the Calcutta On-
line team. Was involved in HTML and CGI development.
- Great Lakes Power (USA): The page involved
incorporating CGI Scripts using Perl for querying and
reporting on the company's data. This third-party
contract was executed within a limited time. Java applets
and Java Scripts were also used. Coded the Perl scripts
and HTML for a number of modules.
- PC-Quest Compass Expo 97: This site
generated many booth bookings.
- Travel and Tourism Fair 97: Registration
forms were available on-line for application for booths.
The whole venue was divided into 5 sections. Image maps of
these sections contained booth spots, which were allocated
a number. The user is allowed to book a stall and send
payment information on-line. The scripts were written in
Perl. The booth booking database used Access 2.0. It was
updated after each request. The request was also mailed to
the people involved in the fair to confirm the entries.
The request was then processed and a payment invoice mailed
to the client. The system allowed instantaneous booking of
booths and reduced the number of people involved.
