Subject: Manufacturing Production Supervisor
Dear Sir/Madam,
My most recent employment has been with Crossroads C&I Ltd. I worked there as a receiver for about a year, then was transferred to the fabrication department, where I worked for about 5 years in several different departments: operating laminating machines, band saws, CNC routers and profilers for cutting pipe insulation. I was the lead hand in the metal department where I cut and fabricated metal parts for pipe cover jacketing.
In every department that I worked I introduced innovations that improved efficiency and productivity in that department. I some cases I was able to double and even triple productivity. By making adjustments to guides, designing and building special attachments for some of the machines, or simply cleaning or sanding built up glue and paint off certain surfaces, I could make them run more smoothly and efficiently. In some cases I built new tools completely from scratch. Extensive documentation of these innovations, and others, is contained in my portfolio and is available upon request.
The area that I have worked in the longest is gold jewellery manufacturing (Master Goldsmith and expertise in precious metal manufacturing processes) but I have experience in many other areas including wood frame construction (framing), general construction labour, oil refinery unit operator, auto mechanics, and small appliance repair.
I have driven a variety of trucks, forklift, power jack, farm vehicles, and operated construction site power tools and air tools.
I have owned and operated my own manufacturing businesses, and have supervised and trained employees and apprentices. The enclosed r sum will give you more details as to my qualifications.
Please feel free to contact me at 403-***-**** to discuss any opportunities.
Sincerely,
Gerry Rioux

Supplement to resume:
This is an extract taken from my resume for software development. Hopefully it gives an indication of at least some of the ways my computer engineering knowledge can be applied in a manufacturing environment.
I have recently completed studies and received my diploma in Computer Engineering Technology (CNT) from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
Since graduating, I have worked on various projects including: a programmable oven temperature controller using a Motorola based micro controller and programming in assembler language, various databases using Oracle, a web based database using MySQL and PHP for the server side scripts, and a simple object oriented database (based on a different storage and retrieval concept) using link lists (fast data arrays).
I developed a Windows program using C++ and MFC (Microsoft Foundation Classes) that I took to work to help me organize my work orders and do all the trig calculations to determine the machinery settings and material requirements in my department. This application reduced my paperwork processing time by a factor of 10, reduced the amount of material used by 15% to 20% overall, and eliminated errors that cost the company in terms of nonconforming products, returned orders, poor customer relations, wasted materials, and lost man-hours. The program has a user-friendly graphical user interface and all of my helpers and co-workers found it very easy to work with.
I developed a database, using Microsoft Access, for the manager of the fabrication shop. The database was needed to determine productivity levels for different departments and labour times for products to aid in product costing and to develop training programs. It also aided in scheduling upcoming jobs, by providing information about budgeted times for work in hand and the availability of staff and their levels of training.
Because of my background in mechanics, fabrication, mathematics, electronics and computer programming, I was able to design and build an optical rotary encoder using a disk from a DVD container, an LED, a photocell (and several other electronic components), a microcomputer, and a digital LED number display. I attached the rotary encoder to a ground-measuring tool that I purchased from Canadian Tire and used it to measure the length and count the number of sheets cut on a metal cutting machine. This apparatus reduced the time for cutting metal sheets by at least half.
The enclosed resume will provide you with more details of my qualifications.
Please feel free to contact me at 403-***-**** to discuss any opportunities.
Sincerely,
Gerry Rioux
