A person who is qualified to calculate commercial risks and probabilities that take into account uncertain future events will choose to use a calculator and charted datum over crystal ball especially in such contexts as life insurance. After all, the subject is an actuary and not a fortune teller. The former deals with more tangible forms of extrapolation, even though intuition may be a useful element, particularly if it is backed up by years of experience. Thomas B. Bowling, FSA, MAAA is such an actuary, with several decades worth of experience. Currently he is Life and Health Actuary for New Mexico General Services Department, NMGSD / Risk Management Division, and the Chief Life and Health Actuary for the Insurance Division of the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission, NMPRC. Mr. Bowling is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, which is the highest designation earned within the Society of Actuaries, SOA.

The Risk Management Division (RMD) was created by New Mexicoas Legislature to protect and conserve the stateas human and physical resources and financial assets. RMD provides: multi-line insurance coverage programs, employee health benefits programs, loss prevention and control initiatives, dispute prevention and resolution services, and legal defense for the State of New Mexico. The Life and Health Actuarial Division is responsible for receiving and analyzing all individual/group forms and rates for annuities, accident and health insurance, long term care insurance, disability insurance, Medicare supplement insurance, life insurance and credit life insurance sold by licensed insurance companies in the State. This ensures that the forms for the aforementioned products are fair and reasonable and that the premium rates are calculated in accordance with State law.

One of the first steps on Thomas Bowlingas career path was earning a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics from the University of Louisville. In addition to his designation as FSA, Mr. Bowling is a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries a an elite community of professionals who have shaped public policy at the state, federal, and international levels.

Itas difficult for an actuary not to see numbers everywhere. In Thomas Bowlingas home life there are some very important numbers. He and his wife Carole have been married for 53 years. They have three children who have given them four grandchildren. In his leisure activities he maybe calculating his golf score or counting laps in the swimming pool, but this arithmetic it is all in good fun.

Madison Whoas Who Member of the Year and Roundtable Member Thomas B. Bowling can be found on the Madison Whoas Who Directory where he is looking forward to networking with you.
