PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS

Tara Tietjen-Smith, D.A. joined the faculty in 2003. She has been an athletic trainer; a

cardiac rehab

exercise physiologist at two different facilities including the Kim Dayani Center at

Vanderbilt University

Medical Center; Program Director for 2 fitness clubs; as well as Director of Fitness &

Wellness, Director

of Bill D. Bandy Wellness Center, Director of Beaman Student Life Center, and Assistant

Professor of

Health and Exercise Science at Belmont University. Dr. Tietjen-Smith holds certifications

in First

Aid/CPR, personal training (2), CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist),

and aerobics (2).

She is actively involved in the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education,

Recreation, and Dance

(TAHPERD), as the Past Vice-President of Health and a board member, as well as the

southern district

(SDAHPERD) and national associations (AAHPERD). Her research interests include fitness

through

equine activities (specifically equine athletes and effects of hippotherapy on the

physically challenged);

function of the older adult; knowledge and attitudes about sexual health; effects and

pathology of eating

disorders on athletes and other populations; and challenges of rural community colleges.
