The purpose of this qualitative study was to provide a pre-intervention assessment of small and medium WIC-

authorized grocery stores identified as eligible to participate in the Nashville Children Eating Well (CHEW)

Project. Field investigators used participant observational methods to assess 24 stores in Davidson County, TN.

The stores, pre-selected based on their census block demographics, were observed to record the space and size,

types of advertisements, customers, appearance, area surrounding the store, customer service, and overall

impression of each store. Traveling in pairs, each team recorded their responses on the assessment tool after

observing the stores. One goal of the CHEW Project is to help the stores expand the availability and marketing

of low-fat dairy, whole grains, and produce to their customers. Data obtained from the observations provides

preliminary needs assessment of the WIC-authorized vendors. The CHEW project team is using the

information to provide guidance in purchasing and accommodating new equipment to store the new foods. Pre-

intervention assessments can help investigators avoid introducing potential bias and provide true baseline data

for evaluative purposes.
